I too have had gastric bypass. I lost my best friend of 13 years recently. I want to thank you, this show opened my eyes that I may have hurt her in the process. I think we are in such a change when we go through the wieght loss that we need to talk about it and we dont see it as bragging but others might. Thank you for giving me another outlook at this situation.

I think this country isn't supporting enough for those who are overweight and need help. I saw an episode of the biggest loser, and I was outraged at the fact they would take all the teams to a morgue and to the doctors just to make them feel bad about their image and let them know that it could very well be the end of the road for them. Some of them didn't choose to get that way and some did, but they shouldn't be judged, they should be supported and let them know they are doing a good thing. I think this country wouldn't be going through weight issues if there wasn't so much pressure to be a certain size in America. Honestly, that's why we are apparently the fattest country in the world. There's too much pressure to be fit in this society.

Good grief, woman. Come to your senses.

We are the fattest nation because Americans eat too much and are too lazy to exercise.

And too many people think like you do. They want it to be ok to be fat. Be ok to be lazy. Be ok to eat junk. They want other people to "help" them when the only way they will lose weight is by helping themselves. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY INSTEAD OF MAKING EXCUSES!

Being fat is unhealthy and will kill you. That's why the morgue episode of The Biggest Loser was the best episode ever. Once again, apparantly the TRUTH is something you want hidden from you.

You could not be more wrong! Going to a morgue and a doctor was exactly what those people needed because if they kept on going in the direction they were that is where they would have ended up! It is called "reality". Honestly, I have a hard time feeling sorry for obese people (who don't have a medical reason for being that way and I do beleive that is a reasonable excuse). For the others who are just lazy and waiting for someone else to do something about it then shame on them! I have had 2 kids and worked pretty hard to shed the pregnancy pounds. It takes discipline, it sucks sometimes but anyone can do it! Stop making excuses and looking for easy ways out!
You are a breath of fresh air and a voice of sanity here. Thank you.

I'm not saying it's ok, but I do think there are better ways of helping people lose weight. what if it was a child overweight? are we supposed to take them to a morgue and show them what will happen to them when they get too fat?

No child should be grossly overweight. Take the parents to the morgue.

But you are attempting to obfuscate the point.

America is fat because of our eating habits and collective laziness. We have no one to blame but ourselves and no one but ourselves to turn to to correct it.

Your handwringing over emphasizing fitness is a perfect example of an attitude that needs to change. Fitness cannot be encouraged too much.

That responsibility falls into the hands of that child's parents. As I said I have 2 kids and I monitor what they eat and make sure they do plenty of physical activities because they are too young to know what is good for them. No I don't think children should go to a morgue. Adults on the other hand know better. It is selfish to let yourself get that way. I stay healthy because I am a role model to my kids and I want to be around for a long time!

well said:)

And let's not all forget that Rach does say if you eat well you can eat more. Rach's recipes are exceedingly figure friendly as she reminds us and although I have never cooked any of her recipes I imagine that if I did I would eat more of them than would be wise as she does say we can.

I say DO JUDGE THEM! Judge them in the sense that anyone who is where I was needs someone to care about them and about their health. I think that you can judge people in a positive way. You dont have to immediately assume that any obese person got that way by eating one too many twinkies. You can assume that things got out of control for them, and then maybe think about the times in your life when you have also been out of control. TAAAADAAAAA!! Common ground.

Just because a person is obese, does not mean that they are worse than the guy who cant stop smoking, or drinking, or dating many women. How about the guy who cant stop gambling? How about the internet junkie who cant stop being online?

Yes being obese ruins your life, yes, I firmly believe that it is a self control issue, HOWEVER, I also believe that EVERYONE has issues with self control at some point in their lives, if they didnt, they wouldnt be human. Things like this are what make us PEOPLE, and I think that if we all learned to appreciate that we ALL have issues, and NOBODY is perfect, the world would be a better place.

Sorry for rambling :)

Solome,

If you look at some of the other posts, you will see that more people think Dr. Harriette is abolutely F***ING nuts. Pardon my French. I'm sorry, but having been overweight most of my life and struggling, I only wish I had insurance to get gastric bypass. I don't th ink it's fair (and most people agree) that Dr. Harriette is blaming someone who finally did something about being overweight, had the surgery, and is now healthy and happy. I don't think it's bragging, but you have every right to be proud of what you've accomplished. Losing weight is NOT easy. Believe me, I know! And if you lose people you thought were your friends because they say you were bragging, well, they're not really your friends anyway. If they were your friends, they would be HAPPY for your success, not try to make you feel guilty just because they don't have the courage to do what you did and lose the weight. These people are what I call "bring you downers" because they don't want you to be happy because it makes them feel superior when you have something holding you down. But when you have success, they feel bad about themselves because they don't feel as comfortable because you look better than them and they have to make themselves feel better by bringing you down. It's not bragging, really, and so what if it is a little? you've had a great accomplishment and you DESERVE to be bragging, especially to people you thought were your friends. If they're not happy and supportive for you, then they're not really your friends and you're better off without them. Good riddens. Find some new friends who will support you no matter what!

I was disabled at work, and now my work friends don't talk that much to me anymore. And my best friend has stepped back alot all so. I had lost 60 pounds before I was hurt and now have put 30 back on. My family has been the best. And my Husband Is the best of all, he has let me be myself and when I ask for help he there in a second. But never over helpful. I need to do for myself I know that.

It amazes me that through these discussions, it seems that everyone thinks that because people are overweight they don't know it. People who are overweight know the health risks, just like smokers and alcoholics. Overweight people have mirrors, they know that they are not size 2s. They are reminded of this every minute of everyday. They see the same ads on TV as everyone else, the see the same news casts, they see the same advertisements that the rest of America sees. They feel bad enough about themselves as is, they have obviously lost control of a situation and don't know how to get it back. The other factor in this is that fresh fruits and veggies are way more expensive than the chicken nuggets and the packaged foods. In a time when people have such large expenses such as heating oil for their house in winter and medications and doctors bills that aren't covered by insurances, I think soemtimes a parent has to make an unhealthy choice for food for their child so that they can also heat their home or get vaccinations. I think that it is a disgrace to society for people to sit in judgement of someone else because of their size or their childs size. You have no idea of a person's situation until you have walked beside them through it all. This country could use a lot less of the blaming and critizing others attitude and a lot more of the help thy neighbor attitude. AS they say it takes a village, and I don't see too many villages left out there.

princess_mama
Are you kidding me? I go grocery shopping every week and the variety of healthy foods out there is abundant and not expensive! Frozen veggies are just as good as fresh and you can spend less than a dollar on them and what about fresh fruits and veggies? I buy a large bag of baby carrots for less than 2 dollars. My kids eat chicken nuggets too, just the serving size with fruit or veggie. I dont understand it is very easy to provide healthy meals for kids. Most public schools offer free or low priced breakfast and lunches. Parents are to blame for obese children! There is no excuse. As far as judging maybe I was a bit harsh but people need to take responsibility for themselves. Is there a surgery for people to quit smoking or get off drugs?

jsjc1013
I am sorry you must have missed the part where I said the word FRESH. I understand that people need to take responsibility. I don't disagree at all. I was jsut saying that people who are overweight know it. They don't need someone else to point and make comments or to come right out and tell them. The other point I was making was that we are very quick to judge other people and I am a firm believer that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I know parents need to help their children grow healthy in all aspects of life and they are the ones who are responsible. I just think that we could all use a little help now and again, so maybe we should consider that.

It's ridiculous statements like this that help perpetute the epidemic of obesity in this country. SHame on you!!

Anyone who thinks it's more expensive to eat nutritious food than to eat junk is WRONG. Plain and simple.

Lurch_Papa
I get bananas at about 65 cents a piece and they are 100 calories and a natural appetite suppressant.

RachRocks
At the BJ's or Sam's Club, fruit and vegetables tend to be cheaper. For a 3# of bananas, we pay $.99. Most kids won't eat food that if their parents don't eat them. We buy a lot of frozen vegetables because they easier to store.

princess_mama
There is so much help out there these days there is no excuse to be obese to the point you are risking your health! Schools are educating children about healthy choices and physical fitness, they are taking junk food out of schools not even allowing them for parties and special snacks anymore. I think this is great! People have so many options to help them lose weight, some just choose to make excuses as to why they can't!

Lurch_Papa

Right, and a box of frozen, mixed vegetables is 89 cents and is, I think, 4 servings. Vegetables are actually quite cheap as long as you are not buying artichokes.
