Rottweilers and Pitbulls

I am VERY disappointed to hear Rachael Ray's comments on today's show regarding Rottweiler and Pitbull breeds of dogs. She mentioned that people shouldn't be afraid of them. How totally irresponsible to make such a broad statement like that. Statistics show that the breeds most often involved in fatal attacks are Rottweilers and Pitbulls and more disturbing is that the majority of the victims are children. Stick to cooking and interviewing celebrities, Rachael. Be careful of making statements about subjects on which you are obviously ignorant. Not that you would care considering your huge monopoly of magazines, tv shows, products for which you are a spokesman, etc., but you just lost a viewer today.

Don't give up on the show because of her comments on dogs, her show really is a cooking show. If I was watching the dog show and hear the comments about those breds being gentle, etc. my hairs would stand up. but Rach she is just in love with her dog. \You gave her excellent advice stick to the cooking topics.

I think that was in defense of all the dogs getting a "bad rap" just because of their breeds. I happen to agree with Rachael...it's all in how you raise them. I happen to own four wolf hybrids, which also get a lot of bad press, but they are the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet! I wouldn't trade them for ANY other breed. Also, my brother owned a Rottie and she was adorable - wouldn't hurt a flea!! Don't lump all those breeds into one. A lap dog can be just as vicious as the next dog.

Ms MaryAnn
Chuzme, I agree with you fully. It depends on how the animal is raised as well as bred. In-breading is unhealthy for all species of animals, including humans..which is why it's illegal to marry a relative. A puppy that is given love and affection will respond. If you take a poodle and use it for dog fights, they will respond in kind.

I totally agree that it is in how the dog is raised. While I don't like pits and rotts, I don't think all of them are bad. Some people purchase those breeds for security reasons or for illegal dogfighting. In fact, I'm more of a cat person and some cats can be mean as well.

I agree, it's totally on the owner on how the dog is raised. I am more a Rott fan than a Pit (but a DEVOUT German Shepherd fan). My sister had a rott for a long time, and with the exception of the drool off the jowls, it was an awesome dog. VERY family oriented.

stop breeding these dogs is "Easier said than done". who would stop the breeding of these dogs... Definitely not the people who are breeding and making their money., for some reason there seems to be an increase demand for these types of breeds.

I guess if you want to stop watching the show because Rachael said something you didn't like, that's your perrogative. Me personally, I'd rant about it and move on, but that's just me. As for the pitbulls and rottweilers, I've met mean ones and nice ones. So what makes the difference? I heard bad dogs aren't born they're made. Not sure if there is any truth to that though.

i have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier a lot of people say they are nasty ,but ours is like a big baby , I think it's how you treat your pets and not just the breed that makes your pet who he is

The only pitbulls I know are owned by drug dealers..I do know some loveable rotties though..

Lisa
I have owned a Rottweiler and she just passed away...I will definitely own another one...you couldn't ask for a better dog and I wouldn't trade her for anything...there are people in my suburbia neighborhood that own the best Rottie's also, they are not mean...protecting their family is a lot different than being mean...so does that mean that every dog that protects their family shouldn't own that dog?...People, stop being so ignorant on topics that you do not know anything about...my stepson had a pitbull that was just as lovable as can be...they are not all nasty and it's all in how they are raised...hhmm, I was bit by a schnouzer - does that mean they are all bad?

People making snide remarks about these dogs obviously arent "dog people" and probably have never even heard of Cesar Milan.. (sigh, shaking head bercause of their total lack of reason). I'll stop lurking at this site now.

I'd have to agree with the Rach on this one. Not all Rottweilers or Pitbulls are harmful and in fact, some are rather sweet with kids and it's an unfortunate reality that some are put down because everyone thinks all them are bad. Any dog can be a vicious animal, it all depends on how they're brought up!

jessica-ann
I love both of those species!!!
I havent met a mean one yet!!!
MY old boss has four Pitbulls in the same house (she has a farm)
and they were the kindest and tamest dogs i have ever met.
its all on how you raise, train, and trwat your dogs.
if you raise them to be agessive then they well be agressive.

I appreciate all the comments on this topic and here is my last comment for this topic, since there is no shortage of experts these days....please try not to take advice without considering the expertise of the person handing it out.

What I said was it was irresponsible to make such a broad statement as "people shouldn't be afraid of them". That's like saying "Go ahead - play with the gun. Maybe it's loaded, maybe it isn't." I realize it's how you raise them, but she shouldn't have made such a generalized statement. I have a friend who was attacked by a Pitbull. Luckily he didn't listen to someone as naive as Rachael and he only has scars from his encounter.

I'm done. Enough said.
