I was a florist for over 25 years. I always had my rose shipments
delivered to the shop as close to "V-Day" as possible and were made up as near to that date as I could.(I was a "one man band" and did the bulk of make-up and delivery myself.)Roses were packaged in water tubes and stayed as crisp and fresh as the day I unpacked them.My secret was cutting them, putting them in warm (not hot) water..(after all you don't wash your face in cold water
to open pores, do you?) that was mixed 1/2 and half with lemon-lime soda. The roses love the carbonation and feed on the sugar..
plus they absorb more of the warm water this way. The roses should be re-vased with the fresh concoction daily as well as
re-cutting with a knife on a slant..don't use shears. Being in the business for so long, I knew my clientele well. The majority
not being rich could not afford a 1/2 dozen or dozen of roses and
hemmed and hawed as to what to do until I said my standard phrase
which put a lot at ease.."One rose says volumes where a dozen doesn't say anything.." Just picture your fella picking one rose out of 100 in a large bucket because he thought that was the most beautiful one for his own most beautiful one..kinda gets to you doesn't it? On a personal note..my husband and I have been together for 6 yrs. and married for five this year..I married at age 50 for the first time. The first flowers he ever bought me were orange roses from the grocery store. I carried a whole cascade bouquet of sunset orange roses and baby's breath at our wedding and he continues to surprise me with orange roses at non-celebration times just because. It doesn't bother me that they come from the grocery store..I know how difficult the color is to find. A few years ago he went to a local florist two weeks before Valentine's Day and ordered a dozen orange roses and went through
many fretful days(and many dollars) worrying that orange would not arrive from the grower as the florist could not guarantee them..If, by chance, he had found them in the grocery that would have been ok by me..It is the loving thought that counts.
While picking out goodies for your valentine..consider being a "Valentine Angel" to others..Are there 2 or three ladies in your office who have lost their special someone to an illness or,for one reason or another,do not have one at the present time. Why not pick out three roses or carnations and put them on their desks with a "Just because you're special" enclosure card. Just might make someone's day..whatcha think??
