As a nail tech for almost 20 years, I can't wait to see this one!

Only problem is that whenever anyone does a story on these places, the legitimate nail techs get the heat!

These stories should make people question THOSE places, the ones with unsafe practices and no licenses. They're known around the business as "chop shops" for some reason!

That is really something to look at the next time anyone goes to the nail salon. I'm in the healthcare field and I make sure that I see what they're doing as far sanitizing their instruments go. Those of us who work in my field know about how to sanitize and keep them that afterwards so they can be used an a new person. If I didn't see it come from the back where the autoclave is then I ask where did it come from and is it clean.

I really appreciated this segment on nail salons.

I'm wondering what we should look for when picking a hair salon too. There have been times I've wondered whose hair that comb had been through last or what was being sprayed out of that unmarked bottle. And do they steralize the rollers between perms?

Where can I find information regarding cleaniness standards in my state of Florida for both nail and hair salons?

I went for a wax and a pedicure while I was pregnant, right before I was scheduled to have a c-section. I had my first "bikini" wax and my first pedi-cure. After my c-section my son and I both developed MRSA. He was affected in his diaper area, the staph entered his circumsion wound and I was infected by my c-section scar. I never knew where the MRSA came from, but I never suspected the salon. Two months after my son was born and the MRSA was treated and "irradicated" from my house, I went back to the salon for another pedicure. My husband ended up with a MRSA infection two days later and was hospitalized. I am not sure where the initial staph infection came from (hospital or salon) but it does seem awfully coincidental that the second infection in my house came after I went back to the salon. I have not been back to the salon since then, and after watching today's episode, I don't think I'll ever feel confident enough to get another pedicure. The MRSA infections terrified my whole family and if there is even the slightest chance that I brought the bacteria in my home from the salon, I won't risk doing that again.

I am a man who has always thought I can care for my nails myself..it is cheeper, and safer.
Also the unlabled bottles is illegal as per OSHA, all bottels, even water must be labeld, and the lable must have MSDS IFO!! It is a heavy fine if caught!

It was a great reminder to examine the nail salon equipment.
Thank you for this segment. I was wondering if anyone inspects salons in every state.

I am outraged at the many salons that do not follow state board regulations for sanitation! I have been a licensed cosmetologist for 18 years and most of those years I have performed various nail services to my clients. One of my biggest emphasis is on salon sanitation. I have several customers who are cancer patients and sanitation is very important to me and my clients. I recently visited a nail salon in my area with a teenage girl who had just received a nail service and within 24 hours came to me with many questions. I was outraged that this young girl walked away from the salon with a nail infection on all her fingers, so much so that I felt that I needed to confront the manager of the salon she received her service and infection from! The manger argued with me that it was only a chemical reaction- after about 15 minutes of this, we left and her mother took her to her doctor who indeed informed her that she had an infection. She is on medicine to treat this. While in the salon, I asked to see all the products that were used on this girl. Nothing was labeled. Please inform your audience to look for reputable names in the industry such as OPI or Creative Nail Design. Also, I warn everyone I come in contact with to avoid the nail drills- these are very damaging to the nail and cuticle area. I have seen many people with permanent nail damage from someone who used a nail drill without the proper education of the instrument! What scares me the most about these salons is that some of the products they use contain a chemical known as MMA- which has been proven to cause irreversible kidney and liver damage when absorbed into the body as well as cancer. I applaud you for informing your audience of the dangers of the lack of sanitation in salons, but I also want to warn people that the products being used in some of the not so reputable salons can cause far more serious problems!

I went in once to get a mani and a pedicure from this place in Miami, Florida and two days later I got a plantar wart. It took almost 2 months of constant treatment to finally get rid of it. I'm so skeptical of nail salons that I usually just do them myself now.

Thank you! Thank you! I am a cosmetologist/ Nail Tech and I happy that you brought this to everyone's attention! It is a huge problem in the industry that needs to be addressed. The public needs this information to help shut down the bad places.
Barbara Walters did a story about bad salons and dangerous acrylic nails about 6 or 7 years ago that opened up everyones eyes. BUT she ended her story by suggesting that maybe people shouldn't get acrylics done at all. She failed to mention the fact of the good acrylic products and the salons that fallow the laws to keep the public safe. Her story ruined my acrylic business for sometime.
Thank you for a story well told!
Great job,

Great job on this story! I've been a Nail Tech for over 10 years and this is a story long over due. There are too many salons that are not safe! Thanks for opening peoples eyes!
