knowing when to stop driving?

dbalsman
Thanks to the show for letting everyone know about this subject. My Mother suffers from Alzemiers and because I am only one of 6 siblings my vote for her to stop driving didn't count. This matter has torn our family apart and we all can no longer share what other families take for granite. I was the one who finally after the Dr. insisted and the lawyer made very clear the liability if Mom were to have an accident. My sister who is the Power of Attorney insisted Mom is just fine and that we would be taking away the only thing she has to look forward to. So I filed a form with the State which just asked her to simply take the road test or surrender your license. My sister said I ruined my Mom's life and how could a daughter who loved her Mother do such a thing and she says that God has always given her the wisdom to make the right decisions for our Mom. I have no regrets even though it cost me my relationship with 2 of my sisters. Mom no longer drives and I feel that God was working through me. I did not take this lightly and after 2 years of fighting the POA I did the only thing I could, enlist the help of your State and also the Alzeheirs Association.

N SC, the lt. gov has a lot of info/reasources on how to assist your aging family memeber. What a sweet story! I cried. It usually is not that easy, family member giving up her keys!!
Thanks Rach!

I thought it was a very sweet, respectful and helpful way of getting a loved one to give up their keys. We have an elderly aunt that we have been dreading to do this with but what a great idea! If we give her an alternate way of getting around besides just us I know she will feel less like she is giving up her freedom. I know that has been something she dreads. Thanks for the great tip!

Congratulations, Rachael, for covering a topic that many of us haved faced or will have to face one day. You handled that so well and your prize for Mary of a driver was wonderful! What a fabulous idea. (I think she liked it, too, didn't she?)

I was very impressed with the way you talked to Mary with dignity and respect. Kudos to her family, as well, for doing this with love.

Thanks for the advice today!
