Dunkin Donuts has pulled a commercial featuring pitchwoman Rachael Ray wearing a scarf because Michelle Malkin and other conservative observers thought the scarf looked too much like a keffiyeh, what Malkin describes as "the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad.

The Boston Globe reports that Dunkin Donuts caved to pressure from the conservative blogosphere — and the fear of a mass boycott — and removed the ad:

The company at first pooh-poohed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh. But the right-wing drumbeat on the blogosphere continued and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it'd be easier just to yank the ad.



Said the suits in a statement: ''In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial.

''


Malkin praised the decision in her column, writing,

It's refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists. Too many of them bend over backward in the direction of anti-American political correctness....

Fashion statements may seem insignificant, but when they lead to the mainstreaming of violence -- unintentionally or not -- they matter. Ignorance is no longer an excuse. In post-9/11 America, vigilance must never go out of style.




Malkin has previously lauded Dunkin Donuts for its support of immigration laws.

Dunkin' Donuts should be ashamed of themselves to give in to such a ridiculous thing as a piece of clothing that wasn't even picked out by Rachel. Rachel, these people don't deserve to have you in their stupid commercial.

See Rachael I told you that wearing those scarfs is not for everyone. You should never wear them because you are too short and also they are very dangerous around a stove.

I was really taken aback when I read the article in Newsweek about the scarf Rachael was wearing; here was my reply to Newsweek.

The real tragedy here is how fast one person can get the waters chummed for the sharks. How far are we willing to allow one person to misuse our resources of communication (the Internet) and send fear flying? Critiquing fashion is not Pam Geller’s forte but throwing misguided fears will send people into vigilantisms.

The scarf (kaffiyeh, bufanda, écharpe, schal, шарф, De sjaal, okay you get it) what ever language is used to describe it, it means the same, material worn about the neck, shoulders, or head, for ornament or protection against cold, drafts, etc. That’s all it is a fashion statement. I thought it was beautiful, it reminded me of a Jewish prayer shawl or tallit.

I saw a pic from the commercial on The View, it looked like it was a cold day and she keeping warm. Anyone who watches her show knows she has problems with her throat and voice. I've seen pics of movie stars wearing the same type scarf and nothing was said about them. I didn't hear anything about the fashion industry or the designer or stores who make and sell them. I wish for once the media or people who are only worried about being politically correct about everything would dig alittle deeper before running with a story that could hurt someone, their famlies, or career.

It's about time a company admitted it has made a mistake. I'll forever be a DD customer. Thanks to Michelle Malkin for bringing this up in the first place!

It's funny when right-wing wackos like Malkin show how dumb they are by making comments like the scarf (and Rachael) to terrorism. But it stops being funny when corporations cave to people like that. Sad day. You know if Malkin had lived earlier in our country's history she'd feel right at home in Salem accusing people of being witches. C'mon Dunkin Donuts, bring common sense back to this country! Grow a pair and stand up to these people!

Given how quick Dunkin Donuts caved in , why dont you just drop Dunkin Donuts as a sponsor ? how about Starbucks ?

I was raised by the belief "that your rights end where another begins". We have the right to choose our clothing, our words, hairstyles etc. Others have the right to compliment or ignore those choices, both sides should respect those choices and leave it at that. The attention grabbing self serving media twists and inflames even the most innocent of circumstances.

When Dunkin Donuts over reacts to something silly like this, that is how the terrorists win. I can't believe that is what we are coming to in this country. The scarf was just a fashion statement!

i have never seen rr in any dunkin' donuts commercials on tv. i only seen em on you tube. i have seen her ritz cracker commercial on tv during christmas last year. i do see other dunkin' donuts commercials w/out her in em. has anybody else seen her in em?

since she luvs her coffee she should do other coffee commercials. 4get dd's ones. i dont even go there much! i could care less about there donuts or whatever!
