I think it is so important to start the kids out in the kitchen at a young age. Put that four year old on a chair at the sink and let him/her wash the potatoes or veggies while playing in water. Let them put the silverware and napkins on the table. Teach them how to fold napkins in half. So what if they are on the wrong side! Will that affect the taste of the food? My kids got a sturdy plastic knife when they were learning to cut their food. I would give them a whole well cooked carrot or other veggie so that success was guaranteed. And I learned very quickly to start supper at least a half hour earlier than usual. Little hands take twice as long to complete a task. And I made sure that there was a plethera of praise. Today, all five of my children love to cook. And they are passing it down to their children.
