Tomboy makeover???

mydaisies2003
I was so disappointed with this segment. The guest "Tomboy" is a beautiful -- naturally beautiful young woman and while I understand that she wanted to try a change in clothing and try something a little more "girly" I was very uncomfortable watching Greta try and totally change this young girl's image. I do not choose to wear 5 inch spikey heels and still consider myself a bit "girly". What was Greta thinking when she tried to offer these to a woman who is only use to wearing athletic shoes? What could have been a really good segment turned into something rather rediculous (in my opinion). The young woman could hardly walk in the wedge heels and her makeup was horrendous!!! She has beautiful eyes but you couldn't see them because of the HUGE, dark (cheap looking) eye makeup. I really felt sorry for this young woman and suspect she'll choose NOT to dress this way again, especially after seeing herself on t.v.
I hope that Rachel will try another stylist for her next guest because I just don't think that Greta was able to connect with this young woman.

I haven't seen the show yet. I'll make my comment after viewing the show today. I'll see if I have the same opinion as you stated.

I think she looked good. Her hair and makeup was a big improvement. She looks gorgeous now. Her friend even looked at bit jeolous at how good she now looks. The outfit was not the prettiest but hair and makeup were excellent. She gets $1000 to spend at Kohls. I am sure she is very happy now.

I was EXTREMELY dissapointed with this segment and to be honest may never watch rachel ray again after this. Crystal looked beautiful to begin with. Beauty and femininity do not come from new clothes and make-up, but from self confidence, positive adult role models, and the inside of oneself.
I work everyday with teen and young adult females (and males and transgender youth) who are trying to figure out who they are. Clothing does not define someone. As a positive adult role model (as Rachel claims to be), Rachel should be supporting youth and young adults as they are - not trying to turn them into someone she thinks defines the social norms. 'Tweens, Teens, and Young adults struggle enough with what society tells them is the norm and who they think they "should" be - lets instead support them in who they are! Imagine a transgender youth, anorexic or bulimic teenager, or even a youth that can't afford to go buy a brand new wardrobe, watching this segment!

I do love the show - but this makeover was way out of line.
Yes it's nice to dress up and feel like a girly girl now and then - sure this gal thought she needed some guidance. I think it was over the top - trying to make her into somebody else merely defeats the purpose and insults not only her, but women in general.
To send her home with the message that she has to wear heels to be sexy!?! Bleach your hair to be feminine? Wear too much makeup in order to be pretty? Get a grip Gretta - it's 2008 and real women are more comfortable being themselves! It is possible to be sexy and not paint yourself all up - it is possible to be sexy in flats.
The only thing I agreed with was the choice of dress - she admitted she was comfortable and it was pretty.
This is sending the wrong message to a lot of girls and young women - frankly I had to leave the room after that I lost my appetite for whatever recipe was coming up.
It's far more appealing to see someone who is not trying to be someone else and is comfortable in their own skin.
Never mind that all the guys/men who were watching merely got satisfaction in their dolly daydreams.

I watched this segment of the show and I also believe Crystal seemed more herself before the makeover. That being said, she did need a clothes overhaul. I liked her hair brown/black more than the new color. The dress didn't suit her at all. I would have chosen a completely white one or something not so flowery. The make-up wasn't bad. I can understand her compulsion not to wear dresses since her mother dressed her up in them so much as a young child. I hate wearing dresses to this day because of having to wear them when I was a young child. Being girly can be taken to an extreme, but so can being a tomboy. I hope that she finds a happy medium between the two styles of dress.

I, too, thought Greta went too drastic with Crystal's makeover. As a former college soccer player myself and tomboy, I can guarantee that Crystal will NEVER wear that dress again. Crystal liked wearing button down shirts and jeans from the men's department. Why couldn't Greta just pick out jeans and a button down shirt from the women's or junior's departments? It would have made the makeover more practical. I hope Crystal uses her Kohl's gift card to buy things that she will actually wear.

The girl wanted a make-over!!! She asked for it- so why all the fuss?

mommysbabee
Wow, why all the dramatic freak-outs? The viewer ASKED to look more feminine and she is an adult - if she thought it was too much, she could have said so. She likes how she looks, and that is all that matters.

Hello...the reason why this tomboy was on the show was to get a make over. If you were listening correctly here friends wanted to get her made-over. She wanted to try something new other than the same old boyish style. Dont blame Gretta she was just doing her job.

How did they contact you??... someone turned in your name- are you sorry you did it?

Nike557
No, I'm not sorry at all. I had a fun time doing it.

A good book about this subject is The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf.

No, I'm not sorry at all. I had a fun time doing it.
Oh good - because you were coming off as ungrateful - and that would suck if you were. Because there are many gals- tomboys or not who would have loved to be in your shoes-
Thanks Greta and Rach for all you do !

megangel99
Thanks so much NIKE557 for coming on and letting us all know the truth about the show, "Tonboy Makeover!" If more people would do this it would stop all the bickering about the shows! I think you stood strong and did what you wanted to do! As far as the make-up, don't you also thing they went to extremes on it? Thanks again!

Hi everyone!

I wanted to join the discussion about Krystal’s story because I’ve been doing makeovers for over a decade and I have never had a better experience than I did with her. I just love her and had the best time working with her because she was so open and fun … we had such a great time every step of the way.

I was a tomboy too and I had a bit of a struggle to discover my feminine side. That’s not something every woman is looking for but it’s what Krystal wanted from us and I was determined to make her happy. I think it’s great that we can all have more than one look and then we can play up the mood we’re in. I still get in a tomboy mood sometimes, and other times I go over the top trying to girl it up. I dig Crystal’s casual vibe but she also wanted a little help finding a dress and changing her hair … I was so excited when we found just the look to suit her personality and that had her psyched. We had so many great options from Kohl’s and Krystal tried a ton of stuff on. Ultimately we knew she didn’t want anything tight or too fitted and I think the end result was awesome.

Krystal - you rock and I’m always here if you want to go shopping again! I hope you had fun expressing yourself with a new style … the fact that you really wanted to change things up is part of what made it so fun hanging with you.

Love,

G
