Fastest Lunch and good for you too

KeLLiKaYe
The school provide a lunch. Save time and cash just let them eat that. It's been approved already and good for the children. Kids will swap food items among each other even when the schools don't allow it.

If they go on a field trip and need a sack lunch then let them eat what they want. As long as they eat it. Kids are energetic and can burn the calories of any food they eat in no time at all.well....so long as the parent dont have a TV w/ videos games connected in their room and let them sit on their hineys all evenings and let the calories attach themselves to the child's body.

Some schools even provide breakfast. also pre approved and healthy for your child.

The peoblem with school lunches is that by the time my children wait in line get their food go sit down they have about ten minutes to eat, they end up scarfing it down and thenthey are hungry before school lets out. If I pack lunches they go straight to their table take their time eating and get full because they like what i pack.

School lunch is more expensive. My son doesn't like it either, he is piky. Since he loves soup and pasta he takes that for lunch (like macaroni pasta with tomato sauce, raviolis... )every now and then he takes a sandwith with pretzels. I also include something sweet, like a cookie or a brownie.

I stopped letting my kids eat school lunch the day my son came home and I asked him what he had for lunch,he said pizza I said pizza and what he sais mashed potatoes. I said didn't you have anything healthy he said I had chocolate milk. Now I pack them lunch everyday. This year they have been taking leftovers like soup or casseroles anything that will go in the thermos.

Don't you receive a menu calendar each month? You can look for it online too at www.schoolmenu.com There are some healthy lunches at my son's school, like baked chicken with potato salad, green beans, roll, fresh fruit and milk another day they have mac N cheese with tomato soup and oyster crackers along with tossed salad w/ranch dressing, green seedless grapes and milk... not all lunches are bad. I look at the menu and decide if he is taking food from home or he can eat at school. He is picky so most of the times he ends up taking soup, pasta or a sandwich. Check the website and see if your school menu is listed. Bonne appetite!

It's a matter of getting your child to choose the vegetabkes. I made it a point to teach my son about the food groups. It's kinda a game we play to see if he can eat from each food group at lunch each day. Now he's proud he ate veggies.

Not all school lunches are very healthy. Not only that you can't guarantee that your child will eat the veggies. My son came home the other day and told me that when they're "finished" with their lunch they can go and purchase other items like fruit roll ups with the money their supposed to be using for hot lunch. Granted, some of them are healthier, but the schools should watch what they serve... if parents want their kids to eat those things, they would have been sent with them in the first place.

Not all schools have the financial option for a good dietitian to plan school lunches. I must say I am highly disappointed in the lunches my kids' school serves. Not only are the "hot lunch" options not very good, the kids are always given the option of taking a bag lunch of pbj and chips instead. I hate the fact that the school is feeding my kids Doritos for lunch when they are supposed to be providing a well-balanced meal. We have since spoken with our kids about what they choose for lunch, but the fact that we even had to find out by our kids talking about it instead of it being on a menu is irritating.

My daughter isn't a picky eater and she hates the school lunches. Now she comes home for lunches and is very happy having a bowl of cereal, a sandwich or some soup. She has control over what she eats now and I know she is eating. Before she wasn't eating anything or her friends would share their lunches.

they also aren't allowed to have any soda, cookies, candy or chips. Not that my daughter eats this with her lunch.

Personally, I think school lunches are too expensive. It's not so bad if you only have one kid, but I have four. Lunch prices keep going up every year. They are $1.75 at my kids' schools right now. If I give them all lunch money every day, that's $35 a week. I just can't afford that. It is cheaper for me to buy the groceries and try to be creative with their lunches so they don't eat the same thing every day.

Our school just instituted a Wellness Program that works with the lunch program. They also took all the pop out of the school and only offer juices, flavored waters, and sports drinks for the athletes. Our lunch program makes a lot of their items from scratch with fresh fruits and vegies. She also takes surveys from the students and has them sign up to try recipes that she is experimenting with and they give her a critique. This has really improved our school and the learning atmosphere.

So, how big is your school?? At my son's they don't allow pop drinks either but I don't think they make anything from scratch. My son only eats at school about 5 times a month, if that. Normally he takes leftovers to school or soup.

I don't know what area of the country you live in but our school lunchs in my elementary school are $2.00 each, and more in the middle and high schools, I'm in Berks county PA. I wish they'd make some things from scratch, they are prepackaged foods but supposedly on the more nutritious line, which they aren't too bad, at least they don't serve them Doritos and that sort of stuff, or soda and they are taking ice cream out of the schools. They send a menu home at the beginning of the month, if my daughter doesn't like what they are having that day, I just pack her lunch, which is more than 1/2 the time. Good day!

I'm a teacher and can tell you that despite nationwide Wellness Policies, school lunches are still full of prepackaged, chemical ladened, high sodium foods. They also are still allowed to sell things like cookies, ice cream, and chips as long as they are "low fat." Schools offer veggies and fruit and in most cases the kids are required to take them on their trays. However, after years of cafeteria duty, I can tell you that 80% of the kids never touch the veggies, milk, or the fruit. They nibble at their main course (pizza, chicken nuggets, taco, pasta, etc) and then devour their dessert, chips, etc. Low fat foods are just as bad for you as high fat ones (because they tend to contain more sugar and sodium to replace the flavor lost in reducing the fat) if you consume to many of them or don't eat a balanced diet.

My students don't have lunch until 1:30 pm, so we have a snack in the morning. I encourage them to bring healthy snacks, yet parents pack chips, pudding, high-sugar kid yogurts, candy, cookies, etc. Now it wouldn't be so bad if the kids had 1 of these items at snack, but many children have 2 -3 items like this every day. It's gotten worse over the 14 years I've been teaching. It's sad.... even from a convenience standpoint, how much harder is it to throw an apple in a lunch bag rather than a bag or chips or cookies?
