Diabetes

Not sure were to put this so here it goes. I noticed one thing about this episode that upset me. I do not suffer from diabetes. I have diabetes. I have had it for 16 yrs and do not have any complications. I take care of myself and do what I need to do to keep myself that way but I don't suffer from it.

To me suffering is someone who has complications already. Mainly because a lot of the complications cause suffering. To me it is my life and I am no different than anyone else other than how I take care of myself. My family follows the way I eat and act. Because of that they are healthier for it and it in no way cause them any pain or inconvenience.

I am sorry but I hate when someone refers to diabetes and suffering from it. We don't.

The only other thing I noticed is when you did the pasta and were talking about your grandfather you mentioned salt or salty a lot. Diabetics should watch their salt because a lot either have or end up with high blood pressure plus a lot of people already have it. Because of this they should watch their salt in take.

Other than that it was nice to see you have a young girl on a pump and doing so well. It would be nice if you could do a more in depth episode on diabetes to let young people know that their lives aren't over.

While my kids and I were watching the show and they heard the word "suffering", they looked at me and said "Yeah, Mom, you really suffer. Ha Ha". I've had diabetes for 22 years and neither I nor my family see it as suffering. It is actually a condition that forces you to eat right and exercise, and everyone should do that! I love the Rachael Ray show and I'm sure this was just a slip of the tongue. It is important to let kids know that it is a very manageable condition when working with a good doctor and family support. Another thing that was mis-spoken when they were interviewing the 12-year old, it was mentioned that she checks her "insulin-levels" often, but actually, what she tests is her "blood-sugar" levels. I would love to see a diabetic specialist on the Rachael Ray show to help with carb-counting and portion-control. Rachael you are fabulous and a great inspiration to all!

They don't actually mean suffering. They mean you suffer with carrying it. I have asthma. I don't suffer from it, i suffer from carrying the disease!
I live my life normal like you!
I just suffer from carrying it like you two!!

I have a 9 year old daughter and she has diabetes. At times she suffers from eating to much and not having enough insuline but she does not suffer from it everyday. I look at these children who have diabetes and think that they are very strong individuals. I couldn't live giving myself a shot everyday, sometimes 5 times a day. My daughter is not on the pump.
I just want to say thank you to people like Rachael Ray who are trying to make a diffence in all of our eating habits. It certainly helps me eat better. And I know that my daughter loves her books. Thank you elliot for talking to our youth and doing so much for this cause..
GOD BLESS YOU

I totally agree with you on the 'suffering' part although I think Rachael only had good intentions and wanted to get the idea out there. My husband has diabetes (5 years now) and at that time was headed for insulin use and had very high cholesterol, which often goes along with diabetes. With research and lifestyle change (I consider DIET a dirty 4 letter word) he has stayed on oral medications for his diabetes (his blood sugar numbers have actually come down quite a bit) , his cholesterol numbers have droppped (his doctor is amazed), we have all (we have 2 sons)dropped some pounds and are healthier for it. Some of the changes were made gradually, like switching to brown rice - they fought that one but I use to add it to the white rice and and slowly changed the proportion of brown to white until brown is all we eat. My husband, who was truly a meat and potato kind of guy (nothing green at all) when we met. He recently told some acquaintances about the great meals I create (I was shocked!) and he doesn't know about some of the healthy things I hide in his food lol! My point is, you can change things and it doesn't have to be drastic to make a difference. Since I love to cook and became disabled 4 years ago I have the time to search for info and new recipes that are healthy and great tasting. I learn lots of techniques watching Rachael. I do have to say I think she uses a bit too much salt, bacon and cheese for the health of my husband but I often take her recipes and "healthify" (my own word - if she can make them up so can I lol) them and use her sauces or whatever. I love her shows!

I am glad that Rachel also got the topic out there. I just wish the media would get facts a little more accurate. It drives me nuts when someone sees a show like this then not understand anything about it. It would be nice if she could do a more in depth show with it. Especially with the cooking portion of it.

I have 3 auto immune diseases and as for suffering this would be second if I had to do that. My main problems is low and they are a pain but I guess it is just that it is life for me. I tend to get a little sensitive when I hear things that are wrong, like testing insulin, when so many people listen to shows like this.

With so many people being diagnosed a year with diabetes, it would help to have more accurate information out there.
