i teach 2 year-olds , and have been teaching them for 22 years. one advantage of taking the bottle away that was not discussed is the ability to better toilet-train your child. a child will have significant problems training while taking in so much fluid. another advantage is being able to give your child coping mechanisms-the child learns how to cope with a situation on their own, instead of having mom or dad solve their problem, ie-giving the bottle on demand. solving the bottle problem will become harder each time the parents try and are unsuccessful-the child only knows that they cried and were rewarded by being given what they asked for, so the child has learned, "if i cry, i will get what i want", and will cry each time they are presented with something they don't want-making it that much tougher on parent and child. a child cannot be in charge of the family-they don't have the wisdom or experience, and although it is sad to hear a child cry, it is sadder to not teach them how to grow.
