Obesity is definately an issue in this country, brought on I believe by many different aspects. One is definately the affordability of healthy food products. When you consider it from this aspect then you have to face that fresh fruits and vegetables can be quite expensive. Especially when you are aiming to eat a wide variety.
Canned vegetables can be just as expensive!! Take a can of asparagus that is generally $2.00 for a can. $2.00 that I can eat myself at one setting and that because of the canning process has less nutrients!
I am a single person who aims to eat healthy, and while trying to budget I spend about $100.00+ per week on groceries just for myself. I know families that spend same amount but it's in buying alot of filler unhealthy foods. I recall seeing a family of four in the aisle over from me once with a cart full of hot dogs, cheap lunch meats, bread, cookies, chips, that ended up being less than my two bags of vegetables, high quality whole wheat bread, and fish. That says something!
WIC is a great program for persons to subsidize costs of food; however, it only pays for staple foods. Perhaps if WIC or another program could instead pay for healthy food options we might be able in one aspect to help more Americans in the step to becoming healthier!
