Heavy women make overs

excitedone
do you ever do makeovers on women, like me who are over 200 lbs? There must be some fashion dos and don'ts to make us look nicer. I see most large ladies dressing soooooooooo poorly, including myself. Now that I am turning 60 this December, I would really like to see a show about this.
Thanks.

Most shows consider overweight women to be size 16-18. The other day a show had what they called an overweight model. She was really tall and weighted less than 200 lbs. She wore a size 18 and was very well proportioned. They don't seem to care about those of us that are short and fat and if you are almost 60 like you and I are, they really don't care.

Momsangels5
I know how you both feel. I just turned 50 and know how hard it is to find something decent to wear being heavy. Your also right about the models too. They are tall not short so they look more proportioned. Has anyone else been finding that what use to be a 1X is now a 2X. Also about a month ago did anybody hear what this health care reform is trying to do with people that are overweight they want us to lose weight because they feel it causes diabetes, heart problems, etc. its funny alot of people I know that are skinny have these problems so stop picking on us. I believe we can say they are being racists heavy people are being segragated against.

Excellent idea Ann! I will be 54 next month and am in the 200lb zone. I have been skinny and very heavy, I have been on both sides of the fence! Would love to see makeovers for those like us! BTW, I am from Michigan too (Farmington Hills). Hi fellow Michigander!

We need to do something but WHAT and HOW?
I know too many youngsters are heavy now days, but I have tried
to lose the weight over all the years, and it just doesn't come off.
The next best thing is to be able to dress nicer.
And how about AFFORDABLE too.
Should we start a short and fat but happy club?

Momsangels5
Lets hope they read this board and will have a segment for us short and heavy woman. WE ARE BEAUTIFUL TOO!

I will offer myself up as their ginny pig. I describe myself as the little teapot....short and stout. I try to work on my weight, walk miles every day, do lots of physical work, swim regularly and cannot seem to get slim again. Overweight is not 170 and 5'11". Overweight is 5'2" and 195 lbs. Why not help us out and start being realistic here?

caren
I am 5 ft 3 and 220......but I "carry it very well"......I am at least solid.....gained ALOT when I was laid off in 2007 and have been unable to find a job. We should ALL be their "guinea" pigs....sorry but I laughed when you spelled it "ginny" :)

This is getting very interesting! I had no idea that there are so many of us short, heavy gals that long for some POSITIVE attention.
I get tired of the "looks" that I get sometimes or being ignored when I need some assistance while shopping. When no one comes to help me, I just walk out and go elsewhere.
I am not the heaviest person around, 5ft 2in 204 lbs. I cannot imagine what someone who is 300 pounds must go thro.
We are not all lazy, for some I believe it is just how we are made. All the emphasis is on working out and being fit. I am physically held back on the exercise now, but used to walk so much more.
I do wish to be slimmer, but have learned to love myself despite my size and physical limitations after heart surgery.
Lets hope for the best.
God bless you, keep the posts coming.

I am the fattest of all of you! :(
You have a wonderful attitude Ann!
I have experienced exactly what you mentioned that happens in the stores, what I love about that though is when I have money I spend MORE than the people that they "cared" to help........bye, bye commission!!! :)

Wow! This is great all the support we are gettingfrom each other. My husbsnd never says anything only once in awhile he will say you should eat what I eat and you'll lose weight. I tell him if I ate like you I would be even heavier. Some people just don't get it. I have never been this heavy except when I was pregnant. I have always had meat on me.

I know where you all are coming from. I am 5'4" and weigh about 220. I am almost 53, going thru menapause, and can't seem to do anything to get it off. I have tried it all. The only place I can really shop for clothes that fit is Lane Bryant and they are to expensive for just everyday stuff. I would love a makeover that will help me find affordable clothes.

We are all in the same boat. I am 5'9 and 230lbs and have been this way all my life. And was not into wearing make up and dressing nice but i just got married (6 months) and now i really want to look great for my husband i love him so much. I have no clue where to shop or what to even buy for that matter, I try to wear make up but i think it looks horrible. Plus like you all said money is an issue. Any help would be great. I really hope they do a show for us, or even with us!!!

excitedone
Hi All,
Thanks for the responses, to answer the issue of expensive clothing, yes, the market does take advantage of us.
I have found a web site called www.freecycle.org where you can go and register FREE. You can find cities or counties in your area where the Freecycle network is working. It is a site where you can give away things or ask for things. All must be free. You contact by email with a larger newsletter letting you know each day what is offered. What a great bunch of people. If there is no group in your area, you can start one.
Check them out, they have been a lifesaver for me.

Amen! I too am a plus size (sz 24) I am tall and very long legged, high waisted so I need long length in pants, try finding those in plus sizes! plus my legs are not big so I swim in shorts. I have asked Greta many times for help, but I guess they are not interested in us either.

Absolutely! Every woman of every size and stature deserves a makeover! Overall, my first suggestion to anyone looking to re-define their sense of style is to hit the mall. Lane Bryant is a great store that is in most malls and their store merchandising is impeccable. Looking to how they put their mannequins together and create current looks in applicable sizes is a great place to get ideas. I'm not really sure what your body type is so I can't give you many personalized tips, but this is a great starting point. What works for a woman of your weight who is 5'10" is very different from what works on a woman who is 5'1", so I don't want to give you incorrect advice. Seeking the help of a professional sales stylist at your favorite store is another approach that could be quite rewarding. I'll put a request in to our producers to cover a segment to this effect! Thanks for tuning in! XO GRETTA

OK, I've read all the posts, and agree that it's hard to shop for clothes that fit correctly when we are overweight, vertically challenged, and over 40. However, there are some who have a greater challenge, then that!!
I'm speaking of those like my granddtr. She is 13, overweight, and of mixed race. (She'll forgive me I'm sure, when she see's this). She would love to wear the stylish things frfom Hannah Montana, Mary-kate & Ashley, etc. The largest size for those is a 14. For a girl who has to wear a 20(or larger), this is a fiasco!! Lane Bryant is great--but the styles aren't for 13-yr. olds!! Any ideas? I don't think even Gretta can help with this one!!

excitedone
HEY GRETTA,
thanks for seeing these posts! Myself, I am 5'2"
200 lbs.
Even Lane Bryant is too expensive for some of us.
My hubby's pay was cut 50% last year, so I am stuck.
I will just make do with what I have. I am no fashion
hound, but do enjoy seeing what styles are popular and
then try to modify what I do have.

Momsangels5
I want to Thank You also Gretta for answering our questions. Lane Bryant is a great store to shop in they do have some nice clothes fo us plus size women but like Ann said they are too high priced for alot of us unless you hit it right on the clearance rack.Thank you Ann for starting this thread.

Hi,
Avenue.com is a plus size that has stores in some areas. They are more casual than Lane Bryant and less expensive. You might find some things there. Also, Lane Bryant has a sale area and you can get coupons once you are on their mailing list. I hope this helps some of you.

Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts and feelings on this issue. I feel sad for the young children who are over weight.
I have always been big. Unfortunately my parents did not teach me how to eat right, but I did find out myself and none of my kids are overweight.
But with this fast pace world and fast food so convenient now, some families eat that way all the time. When I was a kid Mc Ds was considered a treat and not a main source of food.
It is good that Rachael is teaching the importance of eating right. I admire her so very much.

HELLO EVERYONE!
This thread has been getting lots of lookers,
so if you come and read, please leave some sort
of message so perhaps Gretta will know that we are
a large (no pun intended) group of women who need
some good ideas on dressing to minimize the bad
and maximize the good in our figures.
There are those of us who are just big, some are
just top heavy and some who have saddlebags. All
can be made to look better by some fashion ideas.
PLEASE KEEP THIS THREAD GOING AND VOICE YOUR OPINION.
Have a great day,
Ann in Flint Mi
