garlic oil????

rlweigand
Hi my name is Rebecca. I am looking for a store that sells garlic oil or I want to know if it is easier to make myself. The only stores that sell it that I have seen sell small amounts for lots of money. I'm thinking it might be easier to make myself but how? If anyone knows the answer please let me know. Thank you for you time and your responses.

Hi Rebecca!
where do you live?
All the major markets have garlic oil, all different price ranges.
How much are you thinking of making?
If you just want to infuse oil with garlic when cooking heat up some EVOO in a pan, dice or cut up a clove or two of garlic (or you can leave it whole), heat the oil on medium, pop the garlic in and keep an eye on it. If the garlic starts to turn brown it will be bitter.......just let it be in the hot olive oil for just a couple minutes or so.......that will infuse the oil with a garlic flavor, the stronger you want it use more garlic. I never have made it in large quantities, have only made it to use for whatever I am cooking at that moment. I imagine you could let the oil cool and put it in some type of container like an old washed out bottle of salad dressing or something. Hope this helps!

Caren,
Thank you for your reply. I would like to make quite a bit of the garlic oil and that sounds like the way to go. My husband really wants it to grill with. So maybe one other question you could help me with is...can you taste the garlic in the oil? Is is better than regular olive oil? I am somewhat new to cooking so I'm not sure. Thanks again for your response!

Yes, you can taste the garlic. You can make the garlic flavor stronger by using more of it. You could also roast the garlic first before heating it in the oil and get that sweet roasted garlic flavor in there. the trick is low heat.

It's better than regular olive oil if you want garlicky oil. But regular olive oil is more versatile, so I would make small batches of garlic oil whenever you need it rather than trying to use up a big batch you have made.

I have found it at SuperTarget. I don't know if SuperWal-Mart carries it or not. I have not looked for it there. I go to where I know I can get it.

I think making your own is the way to go Rachael has made it several times on her cooking shows. It would certainly be cheaper to make it yourself and not much trouble either, Rachael also does a shallot oil by cutting the shallots putting them in a small bowl then covering with olive oil then puts it all in the microwave she does the same with her garlic oil. Really easy and a nice fresh flavor. Let's face it anything homemade is going to taste better than some bottle you can go out and buy!
