Turkey Baster

jmjmhall
I've got a great double duty tip for your turkey baster. I don't know about the rest of you but I had always wondered the easiest way to drain grease off hamburger and sausage after it was fried down. Well believe it or not my husband came up with the idea of using a turkey baster. Pull all of your fried down meat to the side of your pan and suck up the grease in a turkey baster and squeeze it out in your grease container. It works wonderfully. You get all the grease out and don't lose any of the meat.

What an idea, Thanks.

I use paper towels to soak it up.

this is a great idea...i use a collender and drain over a bowl so that i can throw away the grease after it has cooled down.
i haven't had a turkey baster in my house for 10 yrs. (i used my baster on a ham one time and my daughter was small, honey, oj concentrate, brown sugar mix, been in the oven for about 30 min. my daughter was watching and i accidentily lost my grip on the baster and squirted her in the face with hot syrup, threw the baster in the trash and never bought another one again!!!)

Used this for years, but I pour the "grease" into a small pan, save & then heat I pour onto my dog's food (we have three, so it's not too much per dog. So be careful if you just have one dog). The grease is good for their coats & digestion. I know there will be those out there that will say NO, NO, NO. But we have done this for years & our dogs have survived & are healthy. Just don't pour a lot on the food & don't do EVERYDAY.
I'm not sure if this is good for cats. Just use a LITTLE. Our dogs are healthy, have good coats & digestion. Think about it.

great idea, hadn't thought of that...i give the dog some of the broth but never thought of the cooled fat...my pup would love it!!!!

Bacon grease (again, not too much & not everyday), is GREAT for dog's coats & digestion. Again, I save in small pan, heat & pour over their food (we have 3). Bacon grease will make your dog's coat shiney & dogs simply LOVE bacon.

I use a turkey baster if I have to suck fluids out of the car. I keep one in the garage and another for kitchen use.

3445, grease is not good for dogs. A small bit of vegetable oil is, but not the grease from foods.

I don't want to get into a big debate about grease being good or bad for dogs "dalsgal". But we have done this for years & our dogs have been healthy, coats shiney & digestion good. I SAID NOT to use a lot on their food. Since we have 3 dogs, the little bacon grease I put on their food (& it is NOT everyday), does NOT hurt them. If you believe this is bad, DON'T do it. It has always worked for us & that's all I can go by. I might add that we have "working" dogs (hunting). So they are VERY active & that might account for the fact the grease does not effect them as much as as "couch potato dog". Listen, do what you believe best for your pet. I just offered a suggestion.

3445, bacon grease isn't good for humans. Why would you give it to a beloved pet? My cousin is a vet and she grimaced when I asked her about this -- said it can clog arteries in a dog (or cat) just as it can in humans. Avocados and brown rice (true!!)or a small amount of pure canola oil are much healthier than bacon grease.

Is anyone listening??? I said I just did a LITTLE & not everyday!!! Even humans can have bacon once in awhile. Our dogs have been healthy, great coats & digestion. We do not have to go to the Vet for every little thing. Like I said, we have WORKING dogs, they are very active & burn off everything very quickly. For dogs that are not active, those lap dogs, I would NOT recommend this. By the way, our Vet says nothing wrong with this as long as I keep it down. Everyone has their opinion. Like I said before, if you don't agree, DON'T DO IT. Gosh, nothing is written is STONE. We LOVE our dogs & would do NOTHING to hurt them. But we have had dogs for over 40 yrs. & have not had ONE problem. So do as you wish, I do NOT want to get into a "No I'm right & you're wrong" debate. What works for you, DO IT. But don't tell me I do not love my dogs because I give them bacon fat ONCE IN AWHILE.

Wow, kinda defensive, eh? Have a nice glass of wine :)

Bacon is OK for humans once in awhile, so why not for dogs. I too have many dogs, hunting dogs that are VERY active, so I have given them bacon grease on their food every now & then. My vet also says it's OK ONCE IN AWILE. Besides, we have three dogs, so they don't get much per dog. All are healthy & going strong. We even had one dog that was 19 plus when he finally passed away. Right now, we have one that is 10, one going on 7 & our newest is just 2. All have thrived. Just do what you think is best for YOUR dog.

That's such a great idea. I use one with a thin rubber hose on it to get started when siphoning gasoline out of my truck for the lawnmower. It's so much more better than sucking it with your mouth.

i do need to consider getting another one of these....this month's racheal ray mag had a great idea of using the turkey baster to make funnel cakes (tooo coool)
and that got me thinking more
like filling muffin cups.... pancakes...okay stop me!!!
and another idea...i don't have one of those fat seperator measuring cups....suck the turkey juice up, let the fat seperate in the tube and squirt out just the juice and put fat in another container so you know how much fat your adding to your gravy!!!!!!!! tooo cooool!!!

lyndasconce
wow thats to funny i thought i was the only one to use the turkey baster for grease. it workes great!! this is the first time looking at the message boards and i have to say wow all of the Negativity is sooo not cool.

Hello, lyndasconce! Glad you're here!

I think you will find most of the discussions here are positive. You just happened to find some strong opinions about dog health. And out of that discussion, we have a wealth of original ides for handling grease and automotive fluids. But 99.44% of us Members of ClubRR agree on one thing everytime: Rachael Ray is AWESOME. Who could argue that, right?

Back on topic, I just dump any residual grease down the drain with hot water and soap. I mainly use my Rachael Ray turkey baster for basting turkeys. It works so awesome!

...about bacon grease for dogs...last time I remember studying this...isn't a dogs natural diet...meat? If they were "hunting in the wild" wouldn't they be eating a lot of animal fat as part of their natural diet? So...maybe it boils down to this..the more sedentary the dog...the less fat needed...just like in people. That's my opinion and I just couldn't keep my typing fingers outta this ;)

Right on "Sunnykaren"!!

i use my baster for getting the last bit of jam or mayo, or just about anything that a spoonula can't get to. it's worked awesomely.

My kids and their friends were having a water battle one day. One of my son's friends broke their squirt gun andthey conspired to switch with his little sister. She was three, he was seven. She came to me crying. We didn't have any more squirt guns, but the turkey baster popped into my head. I filled it up, gave it to her and let her back outside. It wasn't long before some very upset lillt boys came storming in. "That's not fair, her's holds more and squirts farther!" I told him to think twice next time before tricking his little sister...or anyone else! lol
