Zip-Lock Omlet

kho77o
I have to give my husband credit for this, and he's not much of a cook.

We love omlets, but hate the mess. So he came up with a buffet style omlet for the family. The kids love it they get to put everything in the zip-lock that they want in their omlet, then we zip it up and boil it in a pot of water. Time is based on the size of your omlet, but when you are done.....none of the flavor has escaped cause it's been zipped up tight. No burnt eggs...perfect and beautiful every time. Dump out the water and throw away the bags, all cleaned up! Works best with the thicker zip-locks.

Wow! That's one of the best tips I've seen on here and it would work out great for my girfriend who has kids who love eggs with all different stuff in them and there would be no mess to clean up!

How long would you cook a three egg omlit do you think or should I try it with just two?

Thanks!

Gross. How much mess is an omelet?

SpitzMan
What's gross about it Samantha? It sounds like a grate idea and I dont like to bash things until I try them because I am generally wrong about it and find out when I try it.

We attend lots of bus/camping rallys and this is done all the time. There is nothing wrong with doing it this way. Omelets can be messy to make and also many times each person wants something different in them. That takes extra time and by the time the cook is finished cooking theirs everyone else has finished eating. Doing it this way everyone has theirs ready at the same time and can eat together with very little clean up in the kitchen.

These are great. I make them everytime my mom comes out. I can't make an omelet for 5 people and we all have breakfast at the same time. This way work great. I have been making omelets in a bag for at least 3 years now.

the first time i heard of this, my son had come home from a weekend boy scout camping trip and i asked hm if they ate that morning and he told me about this and thought it was great.
then i went to girl scout camp with my daughters troop and we made these one morning GREATTT!!!
each kid wanted something different and one girl asked if you could make an omelet out of just eggs, i said sure thats called scrambled eggs.. everyone ate great and very little clean up....the time frame for them comes down to if you like yours cooked "hard" or "soft' and the size of the pot you have the boiling water...freezer bags work best.
but if i remember correctly it takes between 3-4 min for hard cooked omelets.. and we added everything....
eggs, peppers,cheese,mushrooms, ect.
zip up the bag with as little air as you can...squish everything together...put in the boiling water...3-4 min if it is too soft put back in bag and back in the water...
open bag and slide onto plate,,
GGRREEAATT!!!

Define messy? Sorry I don't get it. It's called LIVING to me.

SamanthaLee
Sorry.........I'm going to be sick now.

Seems like it would come out a rubbery mess.

SpitzMan
Well I tried it and it came out just grate and I didnt have all the messy pan to clean up and until you try it dont knock it and it tasted yummo.

You got me there, Spitz.

Every egg I've ever done in the microwave didn't come out right. Maybe I'll try it again.

I wonder if you could boil the bag with the egg in it and come out with the same effect?

I boil it because every time I use the microwave oven I burn myself. Plus, I heard that it isn't so good to use plastic in the microwave at all I think it was Sandra Lee who said it and she knows a lot about all these things you know.

Yummo! This is a fascinating conceptualization of omblit making. But nobody has said yet if you are supposed to whisk the eggs before they go into the bag, or just crack them straight into the bag and shake them around to mix them up? And do the other ingredients go in first or last? I think the kids would have an awesome time shaking their bags!!
