A 1200-Pound Family Makeover
"As long as I can remember," says Eileen, 55, "my family has always struggled with their weight." At their heaviest, Eileen and her husband John, along with their son John Jr. and daughter Kerry, weighed a combined 1,200 pounds. "Being heavy impacted every aspect of our lives," admits Eileen, who finally got a wake-up call when she realized they were all putting their health at risk. "It was either lose weight or lose our lives." They made the difficult decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery, which resulted in a combined loss of over 500 pounds. "Looking at myself in the mirror now," admits Kerry, 24, "I know I'm looking at the same person but it doesn't feel like it."
Though the extra pounds are gone, the family now has another challenge to overcome. "We don't know what to wear," Eileen says. "We still dress as if we were heavy, but in a smaller size." Rachael's fashion buddy Gretta comes to the rescue with a fashion makeover for the family, and advice for anyone who's gone through a drastic weight loss. "If you've lost in the double digits - 20, 30 pounds, and in this case we're talking a 100 plus - you cannot go anywhere near those old clothes," Gretta says. Before outfitting them in new clothes, Gretta tells Rachael that she gave the family one thing to remember: "The only way this will be a success to me is if you see yourselves as I see you, in your new shape, because that's the biggest thing - I want you to be free."
