When a viewer writes to share her surprise that oil can be good for you, Rach gives her the scoop on some of the benefits of other "bad" foods:
Extra-Virgin Olive Oil: "EVOO is excellent for you. I saw this news report years ago and the men on the Greek island of Crete have 10 times less the risk of heart attack than the whole rest of the planet -- and they have the equivalent of a tumbler glass of EVOO just naturally in their diets. That doesn't mean they're knocking it back like a shot. It's really good for your immune system -- no one knows exactly why, but the EVOO is good to go."
Red Wine: "I'm so happy about this one! Red wine is good for us! A glass of red wine is full of antioxidants, lowers your risk of heart attack between the ages of 30 and 50, and lowers your cholesterol!"
Chocolate: "What else is good for you? CHOCOLATE! I especially love bittersweet chocolate and that's the kind that's best for you. It's full of antioxidants and it's a natural mood-picker-upper. Have a little piece when you're feeling low and it'll perk you right up."
Almonds: "If you're not allergic to them, they're not as bad as you might think. Of course, nuts that are cooked in oil aren't very figure-friendly, but if you buy raw nuts or dry roasted nuts, especially almonds, they have lots of benefits. Dry-roasted almonds are said to contain anti-carcinogenic properties, and if you're trying to watch your figure, almonds are very filling -- a little handful of almonds will tide you over for hours."
