She's been racking up accolades since the 1970s, with hit records, movies and sold-out performances, but Bette Midler says her proudest achievement is her 22-year-old daughter. "Absolutely," Bette says. "I worship her!" She credits her husband for being the "glue" that kept the family together during the busier years in her career. "He totally picked up the slack and there was not one day in my daughter's life that he did not have dinner on the table for her," she gushes. And, her daughter always re-pays the favor to her parents on Mother's Day and Father's Day, which Bette describes as a "very big deal" in her house. "They'll put rose petals in the bath and serve breakfast, it's severe!" Bette says, adding that all the gifts are homemade. "It's very moving."
Bette remains a force on the live stage and is halfway through a 200-show run at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. She's performing her classic hits while dancing in the over-the-top costumes her fans have come to expect. "It's like every sequin that was ever made has taken up residence in my closet. It's ridiculous!" Bette explains. "Feathers, sequins, high heels, platform shoes -- I mean, everything that I kind of discarded in the '70s has wound up there." So how does she deal with the Hollywood pressure to look young and stay slim? "I've taken to strategic dressing; I show the good bits and I hide the bad bits, and of course, as the years go on, there's more bad bits than there are good bits!" Bette jokes. "I kept my voice in very good shape. My arms are a little sad, but my voice I work on every day."
The star is also committed to her conservationist group, The New York Restoration Project, which supports community gardens and has a goal of adding 1 million trees to New York City in the next 10 years. Her current fundraiser is an online auction of celebrity experiences through charitybuzz.com, including a package from Rachael with a range of treats for the highest bidder. "I'm making dinner for you at the Food Network, and it's a set visit here and tickets to the show," Rachael explains. "And we give you pots and pans and cookbooks." Bette is thrilled: "Thank you so much!"
