Carter's Bathroom Renovations for Less Than $100
Handyman Carter Oosterhouse performed an amazing makeover on his own kitchen with wife Amy Smart, and he tells Rachael that after the kitchen, the next important room homeowners should tackle is the bathroom. "If you think about it, just for resale value," he says. "And if you ever sell your home, or you're looking at a home for the first time and you think, 'Well, the bathroom's completed, great — I don't have to do anything with it.' So if you can take care of your bathroom, that's a great start." Check out a few of his ideas below, all for less than $100!
Wallpaper Removal
Start at the edge or the corner to see how it's going to come down; if it starts peeling right away, that's a good sign. If it doesn't, that means the adhesive is really on there. Spray the wallpaper with a mixture of warm water and soap (or use a sponge brush) and leave it on a while to release the adhesive. Then go over the wall with a wallpaper stripper, which will release the adhesive a bit more, and finish up by taking a scraper or 6-inch putty knife to remove the wallpaper.
Painting stripes
Carter says that many homeowners like to makeover a plain bathroom wall by adding stripes, but that painting straight lines isn't always easy. He suggests a product called U-Stripe It that can align your stripe lines properly before you paint.
Lighting update
If the lighting in your bathroom is too harsh, Carter suggests replacing the regular light bulbs with chrome light bulbs to get a better look and a better reveal — and they're the same price as regular light bulbs.
