When the divorce papers are finally signed, the only party most newly single people can imagine having is a pity party. But Molly, 36, decided to go the opposite direction after her eight-year marriage ended. "I want to have a divorce party," she declares, "because I am very ready to move on."
Therapist Belisa Vranich explains that although Molly's divorce celebration may sound a bit unusual, it's part of a growing trend; to help themselves deal with the trauma and stress that comes with a divorce, women are throwing parties to embark on a new chapter in their lives. "This is something that we're going to see happen more and more often," Belisa says. "Instead of being ashamed, people are going to actually celebrate this new part of their life."
The party Molly throws for herself features several tongue-in-cheek items that are common at divorce celebrations -- black balloons to pop, banners reading "Just Divorced," and even a "divorce" cake with a frosted groom being tossed over the side. Molly and her friends have a fun time celebrating, but Dr. Vranich points out that there's a more serious, therapeutic need that's being met. "We have to remember," she says, "that there is a long hard road beforehand where you're arguing, where you're tying to make things work -- maybe you're seeking couples counsel. This party is the end of the story, and once you finally get there it's really therapeutic. I really recommended it -- if you're going to get divorced, mourn but then have a party."
As a busy mom, Molly shares that the party was also a great opportunity to reconnect with her closest friends. "I don't get out that often with three small children," she says. "So getting out with my girlfriends was a wonderful time. And it did feel like I could move on. I could close something, and I’m really exited to kind of open the new stage of my life, open the door to all the possibilities that are out there."
