Create Your Own Red Carpet Hair
Can you believe that celebrities spend up to $10,000 for a one-day hairdo during awards season? Master stylist Martha Creed of Fantastic Sam's shows you three different do-it-yourself hairdos - from loose-textured hair to retro-chic and even soft curls - that will have you looking like a star without having to be a big spender.
"I like fast and easy hair," says Martha, "and these are some of the best styles to do on a budget."
The Soft-Textured Up Do
This ethereal look is easy to complete if you have layered, curly or wavy hair.
Step 1: Divide hair into five workable sections.
Step 2: Weave a nice, soft braid (not too tight!) into each of the five sections
Step 3: Loosen the braids and pin them up as you loosen. Don't worry if pieces come out of the braids; this is a look where messy only adds to the glam factor.
The result is a dream-like style that's worthy of any star-studded event.
Retro-Chic Up Do
This ultra-luxe look works best on long, even-length hair.
Step 1: Divide hair into five sections: one front, two sides and two rear.
Step 2: Use a large-barrel curling iron (or hot set) to curl the front section of your head (just above the forehead), and pin it.
Step 3: Make the two rear sections into pigtails and then tie each one into a big knot (literally!) and use a few large bobby pins to pin the knotted pigtails to the back of your head -- it will look similar to a bun.
Step 4: Form waves into the side pieces, and pin them to the back above the knots.
Old-Hollywood chic meets modern do- it-yourself with this silver-screen style.
Soft, Classic Curls
This timeless look works best with shoulder-length hair or longer.
Step 1: Define curls on the top and front part of your head with a large-barrel curling iron.
Step 2: Define the side and back curls with a smaller iron to create a variety of sizes and depths to your curls.
Step 3: Back-comb (tease) the crown of your head for added volume.
Step 4: Pull side curls to the back of your head and crisscross bobby pins through the pieces to hold in place.
Now you have tousled tresses that will surely keep all the cameras focused on you!
