Rachael Ray: Rachael's Daytime Talkshow

Distinguished Mystery Taster

Rachael faces one of her toughest "Mystery Tasters" yet when a seasoned newsman comes down in the elevator. "Do you know what it's like to be stuck on an elevator in New York City?" he jokes. "It's pretty dismal ... and you don't provide any food up there!" Rachael offers to speed things up so he can move to the kitchen table, and discovers World News anchor Charlie Gibson in the studio! "No wonder you were grilling me," she says. "It's what you do for a living!"

He's actually the second ABC News anchor to challenge Rachael as a "Mystery Taster," following in the footsteps of his former Good Morning America co-host, Diane Sawyer. "She was a joy to work with," Charlie says. "I learned something from her every single day, and she's just as nice in person as she appears to be on the air." He moved to the evening newscast nearly three years ago, and while he spends much of his time reporting on war and the economy, there is the occasional perk. "This week I got a chance to drive the lunar rover, which is a new vehicle," he says. "Top speed? Ten miles an hour." Rachael asks if he was authorized to drive this unusual vehicle and he jokes, "On the moon you don't need a license. You can't get a ticket up there!"

Charlie started out as a White House correspondent and has interviewed every president from Nixon to Obama. Rachael asks for some details and he describes an unexpected gesture from President Richard Nixon. "He said, 'Do you have children?' and I said, 'Yes I have two daughters," Charlie recalls. "Two weeks later I got two signed copies of one of his books addressed to each of my daughters." He may be a pro when it comes to interviewing world leaders, but Charlie jokes when he's at home with his long-time wife he's less outspoken. "You're asking who rules the roost?" he says. "She does!"
