Dr. Phil: "We're Not Getting a Divorce"
When Dr. Phil shares statistics about obesity in this country, he's looking to shock you and your family into a fitness routine. "We have an epidemic on our hands: 86 percent of our population will be overweight or obese by 2030," he says. "Your children will not live as long as you if we don't get it out of control." So he started the Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge on his daytime talk show with hopes of turning around the lives of the 13 contestants and inspiring the whole country to get healthy. "You cannot diet your way to weight loss," he explains. "People who go on diets during the year gain more weight by the end of the year than people who didn't even go on a diet! You have to change your lifestyle. You can't be overweight if you don't have a lifestyle to support it. Take it off one time and be done with it."
Dr. Phil is also looking to help people with their emotional health, with his latest book Real Life - Preparing for the 7 Most Challenging Days in Your Life. Click here to read an excerpt of the book
One of the seven most challenging days in anyone's life is the death of a parent. When his wife Robin lost her parents, it was a traumatic experience that actually brought Dr. Phil and her much closer as a couple. "She lost both of her parents close together at a very young time in her life," he explains, "and she said to me one day sitting on the end of the bed, 'You know, I'm now an orphan, I've got no people.' That's the day I told her, 'That's not true. Look me in the eye and let me tell you I will never leave you.' She believed it that day and it's something we take very seriously, which is why I just shake my head at these stupid tabloids -- we are not getting a divorce, and for them to obsess on something that is so at the core definition of our family is just astounding to me."
Rachael notes that the status of her own marriage is also often the bud of tabloid rumors. "I hate to say this," Dr Phil says, "but there is some comfort when they're writing about me because it means they're giving me the week off!"
Rachael shoots right back: "I feel the same way brother!"
