Dr. Travis Stork's Lean Belly Prescription
Summer beach season is fast approaching, which means many people will be trying to lose that belly fat. But as The Doctors' Dr. Travis Stork says, shedding those mid-section pounds is more than an appearance issues. "Medically, we’re understanding more and more about how it's really treacherous when it comes to your health," he says. "The fat that is in our abdomen is called visceral fat, and it literally hugs all of our organs and releases these pro-inflammatory chemicals that can lead to an early death."
Dr. Travis explains the concept behind his new book, The Lean Belly Prescription. "It's both what you’re eating and how much you’re moving," he tells Rachael. "What I like to tell people is you don’t have to give up the food you love to lose belly fat, and you don’t have to go to the gym to benefit. Those are key concepts that people are missing; it’s really about the little things you’re doing throughout your day [that make a difference].
"Let’s just say you go to the gym every single day for an hour, that is still less than five percent of your life," he says. "So it’s what you’re doing that other ninety-five percent of the time that matters: Are you up on your feet? Are you walking around? Are you moving? Because if you move more during the day, you’ll burn 300-500 extra calories a day whether you go to the gym or not. And when it comes to foods, it’s not always what we think is causing the problem that is causing the problem; it may not be the burger you’re eating for lunch, but it’s the white bun with the mayonnaise, the French fries, and the soda."
