Embarrassing Body Issues

Embarrassing Body Issues
Aired on: March 17, 2010

Are you ashamed of your smelly feet or excessive sweat? Dr. Ian's got real solutions for the most embarrassing body troubles imaginable. "Listen, our bodies are not perfect," he says. "They operate very well most of the time, but sometimes we're off kilter and things happen!" So he's answering questions about some common but unpleasant body issues and sharing simple solutions to help.

"I excessively sweat, 365 days a year ... it kind of makes me self-conscious!" Dr. Ian says you can wear a pad or dress shield in your shirt for an extra layer of protection during the day, or see a doctor for additional help. "There are prescription-level more intense antiperspirants you can try from your doctor," he says, suggesting Anticholinergics which contain aluminum. "The other thing is Botox," he explains. It will give you relief from the perspiration for a period of time. "It's not a permanent solution."

I'm literally thinking all the time about poop ... Why is it excessive one day and then one day there's nothing, is this normal? "Most people go on average two or three times in the day, however, if you're having this kind of issue where you're constipated and then you're running, there are four major categories that can cause this problem," Dr. Ian explains. The first is that it could be an underlying medical condition, so check with your doctor. Next examine your diet. "Food is very critical. Sometimes you are allergic to foods high in dairy ... Sometimes people will not be eating enough fiber, or they eat too much fiber and they don't drink enough water, so look at the fiber in your diet, by that we mean the roughage in the vegetables and the fruits." Other causes could be stress or medications. "A lot of people who have gastrointestinal problems are on antibiotics and what they don't realize is that is one of the side of effects," Dr. Ian adds. "You ruin or disturb the residential bacteria that is inside all of our guts and then you have a problem."

It's embarrassing but after having had children and as I'm approaching the next decade of my age group I noticed that you have vaginal discharge ... when do we get concerned and consult a professional? "When your vaginal discharge becomes frothy, becomes cottage-cheese like, when it increases dramatically in volume, when it's odorous, when you have irritation or you notice blood-tinged discharge when you're not menstruating, those are times when you say, 'Wait, something else is going on,'" Dr. Ian says. "Now, it could be something as benign as maybe you have an infection ... yeast infections of course can do it. So yes go to your doctor if you see these things."

He also suggests eating dark green leafy vegetables, garlic, and yogurt to help the situation. "Yogurt, for example, sometimes has active bacteria and that can help replenish your flora - your flora means your residential bacteria that normally lives inside of you."

"I have a serious issue with some nasty, stinky, smelly feet! ... Nothing completely gets rid of the smell!" "Our feet are sweating all the time and one of the issues is we have almost a quarter of a million sweat glands in our feet that produce almost a half a liter of perspiration per day ... For most of us, it evaporates so it's fine, but for some of us it does not evaporate," he explains. "The key I think for people with smelly feet - you have to change your shoes and socks regularly and you have to wear socks. Sometimes you [can] change socks twice or three times a day, seriously. Lastly, spray a little powder in your shoes and in your socks as a preventative method."

"I have what I would consider severe gas. It doesn't matter day or night, soda or water, I sound like Jurassic Park!" Dr. Ian says most people pass gas 14 to 20 times a day and when it gets to be much more than that the first thing to consider is your diet. "Things like bananas and cucumbers, apples, oats, even wine sometimes can lead to bad gas. Now, obviously we're not saying don't eat these foods anymore, but you have to see what is in your diet potentially that's causing this kind of issue and try to modify your consumption."
