"When I look in the mirror I see a child. I don't see a mom, I don't see a wife, I don't see an adult," says Julie, a petite 26-year-old mother who is often mistaken for someone half her age. "My mother-in-law took me out to eat, I was 5-months pregnant, and I was offered a children's menu!" Such reactions are affecting her confidence and her career. "I used to work in a day-care [center], I wanted to work in the school-age room but they wouldn't let me because they were afraid the children wouldn't take me seriously," she recalls. "I don't want to be cute anymore. I would love to look closer to my age so people would start respecting me more. I want people to notice that I'm not a child."

Likewise, Gisele is in her 40s and is often mistaken for the sister of her four school-age children. "I've tried to do my hair in different hairstyles, I have tried to use makeup to make myself look older," says the 41-year-old who wants to be taken seriously as she starts a job search. "I definitely think it will be harder getting back into the work force if I continue to look as young as I am."
