"I dread back-to-school time," says Lisa, a mother of five. She spends more than $525 on notebooks, pens, calculators and other learning tools, in addition to tissues for the school. "I'm supplying the classroom because of the budget cuts." Rachael challenges two of TLC's Extreme Couponing super shoppers to show Lisa how to save - and even make - money while completing her shopping list. See how they did it, plus get extra tips below:
Tip #1: Know your cashiers. "They have the right to refuse my coupons .... so I need to be polite," says Extreme Couponing's Angelique Campbell.
Tip #2: Form a shopping team with other moms. "We have about five moms that I partner with, we divide and conquer," says Extreme Couponing's Joni Meyer-Crothers. "You each pick a store, you each use coupons, and you're saving so much time and you're still getting all your school supplies!"
Tip #3: Buy school supplies while holiday shopping. "Kids like arts and crafts at Christmas time," Joni says. While you're picking up the materials for their projects, grab a few notebooks or colored pens. "Stock up for next fall so it's not as overwhelming."
