Giving Gift Cards a Personal Touch

An informal poll of Rachael's audience revealed that gift cards are a top pick on people's holiday wish lists. "People are going to buy $18 billion worth of gift cards this year," says money coach Lynnette Khalfani, who shares these ideas for adding a personal touch to them.

• Despite its golden color, the American Express gift card is about as close as it gets to giving a special someone carte blanche. The recipient's name is printed right on the card and they're free to use the card at stores, restaurants, airlines, wherever American Express is honored.

• Nothing beats a restaurant gift card for the foodie on your list. Design a "My Favorites" menu, listing your recommendations, to give with the card.

• Give the gift of a movie night! Pack a popcorn tub full of candy and snacks, and design a coupon on your computer that promises the rental's on you!
