When two kids tell Rachael that the at-home haircuts their mom gives them have been a huge source of embarrassment for years, she sends her stylist, Rodney Cutler of Cutler Salon, to help out. Get his tips for becoming an at-home styling genius (or at least for avoiding a "bowl cut" or crooked bangs)!
What You Need:
* a towel
* a water spritzer
* a good pair of sharp scissors
* a sheet or newspaper to lay on the floor -- makes clean-up a breeze!
Tips:
* Make sure the child is sitting up nice and straight.
* Put a towel behind the child's neck and under the hair to keep the hair away and resting flat.
* Spritz the hair with your water bottle.
* Section off hair with clips to help make cutting more manageable. Then work on one section at a time.
* You should never cut hair straight across in the front, and don't try using a bowl or tape either. "You're not going to get it straight and it's going to look like a disaster," Rodney says. Instead, lift the hair up and do what he calls "point cutting" by using the point of the scissors to chip away at the hair.
* When you're cutting the back, comb the hair down and use the comb and your fingers as a guide. Then cut straight across so you get a nice, clean line.
* To get rid of a boy's "ear muffs," section off the bit of hair over the ear and then use the point to trim.
* For layering the top, lift the hair up from the top of the head and use the scissor points to cut.
