When Ty Pennington moved to New York, Rachael welcomed him with a gift basket of kitchen essentials. Welcome your new neighbor with some of these unique gift ideas:
Give the gift of food. Fill a reusable shopping bag or large skillet with some pantry staples: a few pounds of dried pasta, olive oil, canned fish or tomatoes -- and print up some of your favorite recipes that use those ingredients!
Give a gift that will keep growing. Rachael loves giving people flowers or topiary plants. For plants that will be placed on windowsills, Rachael suggests putting pencils (point up) around the perimeter of the pot to keep pesky pigeons and other birds from messing up your flowers.
For space-limited city-dwellers, Rachael suggests a compact mini-garden that comes with its own seed packets of edible clover, cress, lettuce and mustard -- plus, it makes a great conversation piece.
Gardening tip: if you want to help your plants and don't want to use commercial fertilizers or chemicals, you can make your own organic plant food. Take a plastic spray bottle, pour an ounce of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and one cup of water. Shake it up and spray your new solution at the base of your plants and on the leaves once a month.
Give a green cleaning basket. Most people are so excited about moving into a new place that they forget they'll actually have to clean it! Put together an eco-friendly variety of cleaning products and include a feather duster, gloves and other items they might not have thought of -- but will definitely use!
