Build an affordable home gym. Harley first suggests picking up dumbbells, an exercise ball and a jump rope to build an affordable home gym. You can take that a little further by adding an adjustable bench which can be used at different angles. If you also want to invest in a piece of cardio equipment, he suggests an elliptical machine or a treadmill. “They're not essential but they're nice luxuries,” he says.
Fit in the routine, regardless of the season. With holiday shopping, parties and extra time spent cooking seasonal treats, a busy schedule is no excuse not to exercise. “Everybody has 25 minutes a day -- I don’t care who you are,” Harley says. You can go to bed later, get up earlier, or fit in walks and exercise throughout the day. “It can be broken up into one, two or three blocks of time during the day.” Consider something as simple as parking farther from an entrance, or walking up five flights of stairs instead of taking an elevator each day. “Over the period of a year that’s about an 11-pound difference in body weight.,” Harley says.
Be merry, just don't eat too much. “Before you go to any holiday party, I tell people, eat before you go,” Harley suggests. “And if you go to a holiday party and you’re hungry I’m sure you can find vegetables or fruit.”
Motivate, set some goals and recharge your routine. Harley says the biggest misconception people have about weight loss is to think there is a magic pill or potion that will undo 20 years of gluttony in just a few weeks. "I think you have to understand that there is no termination, there is no goal that you can really reach when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. It’s about adopting a healthy lifestle and it’s a journey," he says. “Have a very thought out, moderate plan of attack. Before you start ask yourself is this something you can do every week of your life?”
