Rachael didn't own a good pair of "girl shoes" until she was in her 30s. But from that moment on, it was a passionate love affair. Rachael answers some questions on the where, what and how of shoe 101 and digs some of her favorite footwear out from her closet.
Where can I find shoes on a budget that will last more than one season?
Try not to go budget on shoes. Save up for a really long time, and then buy a really great, high-quality pair in a classic design so they'll last for more than one season. If you buy really good shoes, the only thing you really have to invest in is the upkeep, like taking them to be re-soled. So it pays to invest in stylish, high-end classic styles.
How can high-heels be more comfortable?
Once you go up over 2 inches, rounded toes are a must -- high heels and pointy toes don't mix. So look for cute, pointy toes with lower heels. For shoes with heels that are 3 inches or more, buy a half-size larger than you normally do.
Can you help me find a stylish pair of shoes for fall?
Platforms are big this season. Go for a pair of peep-toe shoes with a small amount of platform in a color that's pretty neutral. You can wear those in the fall, winter, spring and even in the early summer so you'll be getting more for your money. Get more shoe trends for fall.
Rachael's favorite footwear, straight from her closet!
A black pair of slingbacks is a classic, because they'll never go out of style. The open back, closed toe and color make them a four-season shoe. They were also relatively inexpensive and there's nothing Rachael likes more than a bargain!
Rachael also has a pair of waterproof, rubber-soled shoes that keep her from slipping on the pavement. Even though they're not that high, they've got a pointy heel so she bought them a half-size larger than what she normally wears.
Rachael's "go-to" shoe will always be something comfortable that she can run around in, like a pair of low-heeled, leather-soled boots. All she'll have to do is get them re-soled and these soft-leather boots will last her for years.
