Plates, utensils, cookware ... outfitting your kitchen properly can really take a toll on your wallet! For those on a budget, Rach shows you which kitchen items you can get by with skimping on, and which ones are worth spending an extra few bucks.

You should splurge on:

• A really good quality knife that feels comfortable in your hand

• A sturdy cutting board

• A heavy-bottom pot

More tips on knives, cutting boards and pots.

Ways you can skimp:

• Visit restaurant supply stores to stock up on glassware, stemware and cocktail glasses. "They're super cheap," Rach says, "and you're not going to cry if you break the stems off of them." You can also mix and match dishes to create a very eclectic looking table.

• Flea markets and vintage stores are great places to stock up on those unusual bar items such as glasses, pitchers.

• If you're hosting a large party, you can either rent the cooking dishes or buy disposable. "You can rinse it, throw it in the recycling bin and you're done!" Rachael says.
