Holly estimates that her mother Kay, who has spent 57 years without a dishwasher, has washed about half a million dishes in her lifetime. Kay admits that she spends an hour to an hour and a half each day doing dishes, and that her dream of owning a dishwasher was supposed to come true when she met her husband Charlie. "I figured once we got married ... doesn't everybody have a dishwasher?" she asks. "I thought that kinda came with the package, but I guess not."

Charlie explains that his reluctance to get a dishwasher has been an issue in their 28-year marriage. "I can wash a sink full of dishes in less than five gallons of water and I don't use any electricity and I don't run on all kinds of pumps and motors," he rationalizes. "I feel that it's more efficient to wash them by hand." Despite Kay's collection of data showing the efficiency of modern dishwashers, Charlie remains a skeptic. "People have been washing dishes by hand for hundreds of years," he reasons. "So I don't really see what the problem is."

Rachael, who lived most of her life without a dishwasher but now owns one, relates to Kay and gives her an early Mother's Day surprise. While they family was in the studio, Rachael sends a team from HandryPro to install a KitchenAid Superba Series EQ Dishwasher from Sears, and gives Kay a year's supply of Finish Quantum detergent. Not only will Charlie be pleased with the 5,000 gallons of water it will save a year, but Kay will finally have more time for herself. "It will gain you 230 extra hours of your life!" Rachael exclaims.
