Jill Biden's Care Packages for the Troops
Second Lady Jill Biden joins Rachael in the kitchen to whip up an extra-special holiday gift: care packages for the troops! Check out their suggestions for what to pack if you have a loved one in the military:
Cookies. "If you want their cookies to arrive chewy, put a slice of plain bread in the cookie tin with them, it will keep them nice and moist!" Rachael explains. "If you want to keep them crispy, take parchment paper, crinkle it up, make that the bed. Then pack layer-by-layer between each one, more parchment paper - that cushion will keep them from breaking. If you want to be extra, extra careful, you can literally take a piece of parchment and individually wrap each cookie so that it arrives safe and sound without being cracked." She also suggests including dried fruit or candies and gum.
Add personal items. "We always sent something from home, like the local newspaper or local news, so that you could see what was going on," Jill says, of the packages she has made for her son, Beau, who is the Attorney General of Delaware and a captain in the Delaware National Guard.
Socks. "He's a runner," Jill says of her son. "A lot of the soldiers run, so I put in running socks."
Fun items to pass the time. Playing cards, pocket board games or movies on DVD are also great items for care packages for when soldiers have some downtime. Or for women, include personal items like moisturizer or even magazines.
