Caddyshack, Footloose, Top Gun ... Kenny Loggins has written songs for some of film's most memorable soundtracks. Now he stops by to give Rachael a rare, private concert and to explain the meaning and memories behind some of his most popular compositions.
House at Pooh Corner -- "I wrote that song when I was 18. I was supposed to be studying for finals!"
Danny's Song -- "I wrote this from a letter that I got from my brother Danny. A lot of the lines in the songs are taken from the letter."
This Is It -- "I wrote that with Michael McDonald. We had a couple of lines that came with the idea of the melody: 'There've been times in my life, I've been wondering why,' and we had 'You think that maybe it's over, only if you want it to be.' But we didn't know what the rest of the song was about. We thought 'Maybe it's over' meant a boy/girl thing, so we kept trying to write a boy/girl lyric but it wouldn't fit. Then one day my dad was going in for major surgery and he was trying to convince me that he was ready to die on the operating table. So we had a discussion about that. My feeling was that the attitude that he took in would affect the outcome. So that afternoon while dad was in surgery, I went to write with Michael. And we went back on that melody and when I hit that line, 'You think that maybe it's over, only if you want it to be,' I said, oh, I know what this song is about."
Footloose -- "I knew Dean Pitchford, the screenwriter, and he asked me to write a couple songs as a favor. It turned out to be a favor for me."
