Lipstick Dos and Don'ts

Makeup guru Sonia Kashuk gives the ladies lessons on how to find a lipstick color that best suits them, how to apply it, and how to keep it on.

A Color of One's Own

Just because a color looks great on your girlfriend does not mean it's going to look good on you. We all start with a lip color of our own. The color of the lipstick we use changes from one person to the next because of the pigment in our lips. So think about that when you're trying to find a new lipstick color and before you rush out to buy a color you see on someone else.

Think Brown

Brown-based lip colors suit everyone because they work well with all skin tones and look natural. Kim was wearing more blue-based lip color. While blue-based can be beautiful, they're a little brighter.

Make Thin Lips Look Fuller

Women who have thin lips should wear a lighter color to make the lips look fuller. For even more fullness, apply a bit of gloss on top to reflect the light. On the flip side, someone with very full lips might want to avoid wearing gloss that's too shiny or shimmery, or colors like bright red.

Say Goodbye to Bleeding Lip Gloss

Many women in their 40s and 50s worry about bleeding lip gloss around their lip line. To prevent this problem, Sonia suggests applying a little bit of foundation on the lip line to fill it in. Then run a colorless, wax-based lip pencil around the lip line to hold gloss in place.
