Mark Steines' Holiday Card Tips
Mark Steines usually captures the buzz from the red carpet, but the Entertainment Tonight co-host turns the camera on his own family when it's time to create their annual holiday card. "A lot of people don't know that along with chasing pop culture I also chase my kids around with my camera," Mark says. "I love photography. I love tinkering around with stuff like this." He's already made this year's card with photos at the beach of his two sons and wife, former Miss America Leanza Cornett Steines. Mark shares his favorite tips with Rachael for making a personalized card that reflects the spirit of your family.
Start with the software. Find a simple and inexpensive graphics program for your computer to edit the images and design your own card.
Pick a location that fits. Plan a photo shoot at a location your family enjoys, such as Mark's choice of the beach. "This is really us in our element, this who we are as a family," he says.
Plan your photos and look for interesting angles. "When you're taking pictures the best thing to do is get off your feet, lay on your stomach, sit on your butt, find a really interesting angle to shoot from," Mark says. "It's always more gripping."
Get playful so your kids smile naturally. "One particular trick that I use is that I play with them and I say don't smile," Mark explains. "They start to glow and they know that dad's being very playful with them."
Put your subject at ease. When you're ready to snap some photos keep a casual tone. Mark says folks tend to tense up when you use the word "shoot" so he prefers to tell his kids they are making a picture and asks them to join the process.
