Men's Fashion: Do's and Don'ts
A new year brings new fashions, which can be pretty confusing for some of the guys out there who may need a little help navigating the trends. "They might get a little overzealous ... and take the trend too far," says Men's Health Fashion Director Brian Boye. "You want to have some element of a trend, but you also want to be classic." Think your guy could use some pointers? Brian shares his tips for conquering this season's must-have items in stride!
The Preppy Look. Before piling on the chinos, cardigans and striped shirts, Brian suggests choosing these carefully. "All together it's too much and it's a little too costumey," he says. Instead, mix one or two preppy items, like chinos and Top-siders, with a rugged piece. "We're going to take the cutesy cardigan, which is maybe good with a pair of jeans and we're going to change it out for a more masculine leather jacket."
Denim shirts with jeans. "The trick to wearing denim with denim is that all of the denim that you're wearing needs to be a different tone, a different color." He suggests mixing light jeans with a black denim shirt and a dark denim jacket. "This is a little bit more modern."
Bright colors. "When you walk into a room, you want people to notice you, not what you're wearing," says Brian, while suggesting a subtler approach to this trend than wearing big items like a bright jacket. "We've added a little pop of color with a pocket square [and] you could add a bright colored tie with a neutral jacket and pants."
