Marlene is concerned about her 13-year-old daughter Desiree, who loves to wear teeny-tiny miniskirts, low-cut shirts and no longer looks like her "little girl." Desiree says she simply wants to dress "stylish, hip and cute" and her mom "just doesn't get it." Watch the video to see their battle in action.
"We're living in a Paris Hilton generation," says Eva Chen, an editor at Teen Vogue. "Things are really short or low or high. The big problem is the battle of the hemline: Daughters want to look cool, and wear something that will make them stand out ... They want to wear the same things celebrities are wearing."
Eva illustrates the differences between what mom wants and what her daughter wants with models wearing the same exact outfit, but different hemlines. "It makes quite a difference in terms of how long the skirt is," she says.
Not surprisingly, Marlene likes the length of the one on the far right, while Desiree prefers the skirt on the opposite end of the spectrum. As for Rachael, she can't believe that's even a skirt. "It looks like a potholder," she says, wondering how you'd even sit down in it!
"When you have this outfit, and pair it with heels, it instantly brings the 'I'm a party girl' look to the table," says Eva.
Rachael adds, "You're looking at their body parts. That's what calls attention, not the person." To Desiree she says, "[Wearing a short skirt,] you're putting a message out there that maybe you don't want to convey. You're so beautiful, you don't need to be advertising. Your face is gorgeous enough."
A Happy Compromise
"Moms see their daughters as 10-year-olds," says Eva. "They want them completely covered up. Moms have to understand that daughters want to dress to show off their body but there's a way to do it without sacrificing style." Eva hopes both mom and daughter will find some common ground with some of the latest fashion trends, if they're both willing to compromise a little.
