One Family's Miracle Adoption from Haiti
Nathan and Catrina Brock were blessed with three boys, and when they decided to expand their family by opening their hearts to a little girl in need, they looked toward Haiti. "We had known it was the poorest country in the western hemisphere," Catrina says, "and we thought we could make the greatest impact there."
After falling in love with little Dania through an adoption website, the couple began a four-year process of bringing her to their Georgia home. In December 2009 they traveled to Haiti and met the 7-year-old girl for the first time. "That was really exciting," remembers Catrina, "because she was exactly like we thought she would be." Unfortunately, a paperwork glitch temporarily postponed their bringing her back to America, and while they waited for the adoption to be finalized, the earthquake that nearly leveled Port-Au-Prince also shook the foundations of their lives.
"When we first saw the footage of the earthquake, I was incredibly concerned for the safety of our daughter," Catrina painfully recalls. "We had walked through this journey for four years and was she going to die at the very end?" The orphanage, only 15 miles from the earthquake's epicenter, sent out desperate emergency calls, and with the help of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, the 53 Haitian orphans were evacuated to Pittsburgh.
But for the Brocks, there was no confirmation that Dania was among those rescued. "We got an email that 53 orphans were coming to Pittsburgh in 30 minutes," Nathan says. "We threw our clothes in a bag and in the vehicle and took off. We didn't know if she one of the 53. We just were headed to Pittsburgh." The couple's worry turned to joy when they arrived and were reunited with Dania. Catrina recalls, "Seeing her there, knowing it was over, that she was in the US, that she was safe no matter what was going to happen from now on - it was done. She was ours. She was going to leave with us."
