As an animal lover, Rachael's always on the lookout for new ideas, inventions and interesting stories about people and their pets. She invites Dr. Jeff Werber to share the latest in pet news.
Did you know that almost 40 percent of dogs and cats in the United States are overweight? "Only 17 percent of those pet parents think their animals are overweight, which is even more of a concern," says Dr. Werber. And most of those pet owners are packing a few extra pounds as well. Now, however, there may be a solution to help overweight dogs slim down. Slentrol is a liquid medication that would be given to a dog daily in order to make them feel full. Though it's not on the market yet, Dr. Werber is optimistic: "I really it's going to help the vast majority of pets in this country that are really overweight."
This looks like an ordinary cat, right? Think again! This cat won't cause sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes or any other side effects of cat allergies because it is a hypo-allergenic cat! Allerca is a company that identified the gene in cats that causes an allergic reaction in humans. By breeding cats that have a low to no level of this gene, they have created the first non-allergic cat. "What's great about these kitties," says Rachael, "is that now people can have pets without suffering."
