Jamie, a 26-year-old University of Tennessee fan, says that she and her friends take their devotion to the school's team seriously. "Football in the south is a religion," she proclaims, "and Saturday is the high holy day." Jamie loves hosting her fellow UT fans to watch the games, but regrets that her fear of frying foods is keeping some southern staples off her tailgating menu. "It's very important for me to learn how to cook southern food," she says, "because I'm southern as a bowl of grits, and a southern girl who can't cook southern food isn't gonna fly."
