When Robin Roberts and her Good Morning America pals traveled across the country by train this fall to cover the election, she didn't just learn about the issues on the public's minds and their views of the candidates. She got to know Diane Sawyer in a new environment and she wasn't very happy about what she discovered. "She cheats when she plays cards!" says Robin, explaining they played gin rummy during the long train rides. "She was like, 'Gin!' and we would look and we're like, 'That's not gin.' But she said it with such conviction and we thought, 'Oh my goodness. You won!"
After poking fun at her friend (and Rachael's first guest!), she gets serious when talking about her new book, From the Heart: 8 Rules to Live By, which came out around the time of Robin's diagnosis with breast cancer. "Make your mess your message," Robin says. "What is it we can share with others to help them when it happens to them?" Robin also tried to give other cancer patients hope shortly after she finished her chemotherapy treatments this spring, when she bravely walked down the catwalk during Isaac Mizrahi's spring fashion show. "I was about to step out and I had my wig on at the time and I'm like, 'You know Robin, embrace who you are at this moment' ... and I took it off," she recalls. "It was kind of like a a shout-out to all people who had walked that moment before me and who were walking with me as well." Robin then heads backstage and answers questions about her first job, her friends ... and even her favorite superhero.
