Rocco's Must-Try Foods for 2010
Want to make 2010 your healthiest year yet? Chef Rocco DiSpirito shares four foods you've got to try!
• Pop Corn on the Cob (Available at MastGeneralStore.com)
It's a dried cob of corn that you microwave for two minutes to get a delicious bowl of popcorn. "I just put a little butter spray on it," Rocco adds. "Basically, it's a very low-calorie, zero fat snack; it's a new way to make an old favorite really interesting."
• TVP: Texturized Vegetable Protein (Available at Whole Foods Markets)
"It's essentially soy protein," Rocco explains. "It has the texture of ground beef ... anything you make with ground beef you can make with this." Rocco says TVP is perfect if you're going vegan or you just want a carb-free alternative to meat dishes.
• Shirataki Noodles (Available at MiracleNoodle.com)
If you're trying to cut out carbs by giving up great-tasting noodle dishes, Rocco has the food for you. "These are noodles that have no carbs and no calories!" Rocco declares about Shirataki noodles. "When they come out of bag, you just have to rinse off the water they come in and just throw them into a big pot of hot broth with whatever garnishes you want. They don't need to cook, they're already cooked, and they never overcook!"
• Pepquiño Cucumbers(Available at Marx Foods)
Rocco introduces Rachael to a new way to get kids to eat vegetables: pepquiño cucumbers. "It's a miniature cucumber," he explains. "It looks just like a watermelon. It's got great nutrients, lots of fiber and can be used in desserts and on salads."
