When Molly started bringing vegetables from her home garden into the classroom, her young students were confused why there was dirt and stems on everything. "I realized then," she says, "that kids really thought that vegetables came just from the grocery store." So Molly created a hands-on experience to teach the kids how vegetables make it from seed to harvest and into their stomachs.
Starting with a chicken coop, Molly showed the children about different types of eggs and how to make various dishes incorporating them, like stir fry. Next, they established a community vegetable garden where the class picks ingredients for salad parties. And Molly's favorite part of the project is the farm stand, where the kids sell the produce that they've grown themselves.
