Like many parents, Tamar is in desperate need of ideas to keep her kids occupied while they're traveling. "I've got a foolproof, five-point plan," Rachael tells her. "And it's going to make your rides go a whole lot smoother."
• Tire them out. "Run them around and get their bodies physically tired," says Rach. "Then they just might drift off to sleep while you're driving."
• Stimulate them mentally. "Just like you've tired out their bodies, now it's time to engage their minds," Rach advises. "Find them toys that will force them to put their thinking caps on and get their brains working."
• Get them involved. "One thing I've learned from when I cook with kids in the kitchen is that the key to keep them from getting bored is to keep them involved," says Rach. "It's the same when you're driving in a car with kids. Give them little jobs. When they're younger you can buy maps or give them colorful brochures of places and have them pretend to help you out. But as kids grow older, they really can start to help you find places on a map. They can read the travel brochures to learn about where they are going and even pick out an attraction they'd like to visit while you're there."
• Consider getting a portable DVD player. "If you typically try and curb your kids' TV and movie viewing at home, throw that idea out the window when you're on the road," says Rachael. "Buy a cheap portable DVD player for the car and pop in a classic kids movie or TV show to keep them occupied and quiet." And remember, you can always buy educational videos to help you feel less guilty about the extra TV time.
• If all else fails... "It's OK to resort to bribery and things like candy or junk food they otherwise wouldn't be eating," admits Rach. "Just make sure you're asking for (and getting) a little quiet time before you surrender the sweets."
Rach gives Tamar a basket full of useful toys and products to keep her toddlers occupied and ensure peaceful car trips in the future. Some of the items include: Toddler Coddler, Baby Shoe Saver, Carry Along Play Mat and a French Fry Holder.
