The holiday season is a time when we spend time with family...and overspend at the stores! Money coach Lynnette Khalfani shows you the things you can do to take care of those on your gift list without breaking the bank.

• Set a budget and use cash instead of credit cards. Figure out who you have to buy for and how much you're going to spend on each person. Then write each of their names on separate envelopes and place the allotted amount of cash inside. If you use a credit card, you're more likely to go over your budget -- so leave the credit cards at home.

• Decline offers of store credit cards. It may sound enticing to save 10-15 percent off your purchase when you sign up for a store's credit card, but many of these cards have higher interest rates than national credit cards like a Visa or Mastercard. Also, every store credit card you apply for means another inquiry into your credit report, which isn't good for your overall credit rating.

• Choose one gift that the entire family can enjoy. Instead of buying separate gifts, give loved ones something like a 4-pack of movie tickets or a family pass to a museum or zoo.

• Log on to Couponcabin.com to get discount codes. Many online shoppers don't know the codes that will save them money on their purchases. This site will give you the code for a number of online retailers, and sometimes you can even walk into the store and use the same code to get a discount.

• Give your kids a multi-slot piggy bank to teach them about money. Most piggy banks only have one slot, but this 21st century piggy bank has four slots to show kids four different ways to be financially smart: save, spend, donate, and invest.
