What's My Decorating Style?
This family ask for Rach's help in redecorating their blank-walled home. Since Rach spends her days in the kitchen, she called in her decorating buddy Evette Rios to help them find their style.
Save: You can get a sense of your style by taking a visual inventory of the things you already like in your house. Are there any big-ticket items you saved up money to buy or that you want? These are good barometers of your personal style.
Click: Take pictures of items you like that you see in stores. Use a camera phone to snap pictures of the item if you're in a rush.
Rip: Cut out pictures from magazines and catalogues and put them in a "design" file --don't limit yourself to budget magazines and catalogues, remember you're looking at style not price, and style can always be duplicated for less.
Look: Your clothes closet tells a lot more about your design style than you think. Are your clothes colorful? Basic? Monochromatic? Embellished? These subtle hints can point you in the right direction for choosing fabrics and furniture.
Stick: If you like a particular item but aren't certain as to how it would look in your room, take a picture of the room, rip out the picture of the item and tape it to your room picture. Now you'll be able to see the item in the space.
Steal: Attend a show house event where you can explore all the rooms of a home that are decorated by different designers. You'll be able to get professional ideas to bring into your own home.
Add: Small touches of your favorite styles can change the look of any room. Experiment with different tabletop materials like woods and irons. The same idea goes for chair and table legs. Sometimes just adding a touch of one style to a room is all you need to spruce things up.
Step: Start with a rug. "Working your way from the floor up is the best way to begin," says Evette. "The rug is the hardest piece to find for a room."
